I have said this since 2007, as a constitutional lawyer Obama should have been on board with equality long ago - saying civil unions was enough is the same tired separate but equal argument that the Supreme Court struck down years ago when it came to segregation.
Hang on, I am not at all trying to take away from the huge milestone that this is, but just like it shouldn't have been a big deal that we have an African-American president, treating gays equally shouldn't be news.
We SHOULD be past all this damn divisiveness based on race, gender, sexual orientation. Women's health care and access to abortions and birth control shouldn't be an issue either.
Maybe someday... someday... our children or our children's children will look back at be shocked at the idea that we even debated these issues.
My frustration is more with the Rethugs trying (and succeeding in states like NC) to drag us to the dark ages of hatred, prejudice and fear.
I am just glad Obama came to his senses and said this now.

And of course divisions on the topics you mention will continue. Human nature is what it is.

(3,702 posts)Of course cali, it is NEWS, its huge and we as a country have come a long way. But I just wish the response would be "well duh, of course the President is for marriage equality, and he believes the earth is round and water is wet"
Do you know what I mean? It saddens me that this will be used against him, that people are so intolerant. I am often accused of having a fantasy mindset - because I want us to magically be past all this.
But this is a HUGE first step - no future Democratic presidential candidate can take it back!

Yes, it should be a given that a Democratic President should be for marriage equality.
