General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsIf you think a post is about you,
you're probably wrong, in most cases. Unless you see your screen name or a direct reference, it's probably not about you at all. All sorts of people post on DU dozens of times a day. Usually, they are simply sharing some information or expressing their own ideas or opinions. If you read carefully, you'll see that most original posts are really about the original poster, not about anyone else.
If someone expresses a belief or an opinion about something that differs from your own opinion, that person isn't talking about you at all. Instead, he or she is just talking about a personal belief or opinion. If you see yourself in a post, you're more likely wrong than not. Odds are high that the poster wasn't thinking about you at all.
So many threads expressing an opinion turn into a discussion of something completely different, led by other DUers who think that person is talking about them or telling them what to do. Usually, that's not the case. Copycat threads, of course, are about the thread they're copying. But, other than that, it's rare that a DU poster is talking about anyone but him or herself and his or her views.
It's always in order to disagree with an opinion or an idea. It's rarely in order, though, to defend oneself where there was no attack or attempt at coercion at all.
DU's a terrific forum for discussion. It's a place where we can see a lot of different viewpoints, opinions and ideas. That's what it does best. That's why I keep coming here day after day. I don't assume that anyone's addressing me directly here, though, unless there is strong evidence of that. I assume that people are sharing their ideas, information and opinions. I think about what they are saying. I may not agree, but I think about it.

Would that work?

Got a couple of good songs out of it, though, so it's all good.

(146,333 posts)Lots of threads are. Meta threads are OK, as long as they're not whining about DU or disruptive, as I understand. So far, this thread has provoked nothing but humor. I can't see the problem, but there's an alert button below the Original Post, if you want the hosts to decide the issue.
