is because they have extremely poor eyesight and don't know how big you are. If you offer them a treat, they smell the treat and tend to evaluate the threat on hearing. If you are quiet and something smells tasty, they don't get as frightened.

I think I'd rather have skunks than raccoons, though I'm not ready to open my house up to either of them. At least skunks come by themselves. Raccoons come in a snarling, darting and voracious throng.

A former foster kitty escaped from his new owner's house, and she and I searched everywhere online, in shelters, and the neighborhood for months. And when I'd search for Found Cat, and this ad would come up...it started not being funny. I finally responded to the person to tell him how hopeful I'd be with each Found Cat result and how crushed I was when I saw his joke. Yeah, it's funny, just not when people are really searching for a pet. He did stop posting it; I'm grateful.

and interesting fact - their body temperature is too low for them to contract rabies. They also eat the ticks that cause Lyme disease. They also have an impressive 50 teeth in their mouths.

A couple of other weird things - males have dual penises and females have dual vaginas. They have 12 nipples in a circle with a 13th in the center. A female can drop up to 35 joeys into her pouch, but only 13 will survive because that is how many nipples she has.

They only live about 2 years, 3 years max, even in captivity. Ugly little critters, but actually far better critters for the world than most!

Mama was LOADED down with kits. I counted 7. She could barely move with all of them climbing on the bus!

Sadly, they are so short lived. If they could be bred for greater longevity, that would be great! Supposedly, there are some living on an island off the coast of Georgia that live to be 6 years old due to lack of predators and need to develop specific predator defenses. Their immune systems are nearly perfect - they just get eaten by everything . That's why they have so many babies, and likely why they have a redundant reproductive system (two uteri and vaginas in females, as fore-mentioned Penai)
