It wasnt enough to celebrate, and then cynically exploit, the farting, nose-picking hillbillies of Here Comes Honey Boo Boo spun off from your equally repellent show Toddlers and Tiaras (catnip for child molesters). Then you got burned when Honey Boo Boo star, corpulent June Mama June Shannon, reportedly dated a convicted child molester who, it turned out, had molested Junes own daughter years before.
.....
So you abruptly canceled Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, as if that would somehow absolve you (and keep the bad press at bay but that will never happen). Now youve had to face the music again with 19 Kids and Counting, which celebrates/exploits the remarkably prolific husband-and-wife team of Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar and their massive brood.
......
Yes, TLC, this is what happens when your TV lineup includes My Big Fat Fabulous Life, The Little Couple, Sister Wives, My 600-Lb. Life, My Strange Addiction, Sex Sent Me to the ER, Abby & Brittany (conjoined-at-the-head twins) and My Five Wives. You even revived Kate Gosselin from Jon & Kate Plus Eight infamy for a return special. You can repeat all you want, TLC, about how these shows are empowering and spotlight people who otherwise would fly below societys radar. No one believes that. You exploited them.

Not everyone's favorite source, I am aware, but pretty dead on about TLC.

(13,877 posts)Kind of sucks that Kate shut down her "money machine" at 8...maybe it was because she no longer had a husband?

(115,735 posts)The Learning Channel used to have good shows about science and nature and stuff. They've gone totally tabloid in the worst sense of the world. TLC is basically an animated version of the trashiest magazines in the supermarket checkout line - the ones with articles about Batboy and Elvis' alien baby - or, even worse, the old carnival side shows featuring the bearded lady and the two-headed calf and the Elephant Man. It's sad that people allow themselves to be exploited but sadder that others want to watch.

(63,216 posts)Long, long ago it was my absolute favorite station, with top-notch programming about science, technology & history.
The beginning of the end came with the introduction of "home improvement" shows, followed by the re-branding as TLC. It's been accelerating downhill since then.

(13,877 posts)money, and clearly there is a ready supply of viewers and advertising that satisfy that demand.
But they are not the only ones...cable is rife with wierd sickos. Every time one pays a cable bill, they all get paid. They just lead the pack because of their "name" and the "learning" they provide.

(63,216 posts)The pressures of the market will tend to lead profit-driven networks to pander to the lowest common denominator. The History Channel is another grotesque offender in this regard.
At least "Spike" started out crappy and stayed crappy. The Learning Channel used to be a bright star on the proverbial dial, but we see what it's become.

(15,696 posts)I'm disgusted that TLC hasn't dropped this show and is considering continuing it. Those little girls, victims of sexual assault by their brother, have no idea that the world knows what happened to them. They have no TV or internet access. And TLC plans to cater to ghouls who want to watch child sexual assault victims pretend they are fine? Seriously? Truly heavy sigh.

(13,877 posts)geographically based bored and hot housewives, teen mothers, marital matching attractive men and women who are strangers and picked because, I guess, of their physical attributes... I always pick up a tabloid while waiting in the grocery line to be somewhat drama-relevant and pass a few boring moments. Many seem to evolve into difficult lives that hurt their kids, marriages or others. JMHO

(12,081 posts)I don't watch all reality tv shows, but there are some that show us that there are people out there that are different than us and that they deserve respect and compassion, not prejudice and stereotyping.
libdem4life
(13,877 posts)They have already been sterotyped for some reason to even get an interview. IOW, they have to market their "difference" actively to get on any of those shows. For sure they'd never take me, an average divorced, white Mom with one grown son. There has to be an "angle".
It's for some, and not for others...that's all.
liberal_at_heart
(12,081 posts)have often been ignored or worse abused because of their differences and some of them want to get their story told so they can break down those stereotypes and prejudices. I would watch a story about what life is like for divorcees if done respectfully. I have been married for 21 years so I don't know what it is like to be divorced. There are some shows that are done right and tell the story right and then there are some that are done disrespectfully and in poor taste, but if done respectfully a show about how divorce affects women would be very educational and interesting.

(50,566 posts)in some way but just because some people are born with a different chromosomal make-up that produces something like dwarfism doesn't mean they deserve to be called "freaks."
The Duggars, however, deserve to be called freaks. Hypocritical, ignorant, homophobic, religiously insane freaks -- because of their chosen belief system, not because of their genetics.

(21,506 posts)People have no memory for outrage. One look at the Republican and parties recent successes should be more than enough proof of that. The fact that these shows were successful in the first place points right at the general intelligence of the audience. The idea that audience will take this as anything more than another titillating reason to watch the show is pretty hard to swallow. Look at the hillbilly boob otherwise known as Duck dynasty, one of the main chars on that show has said all kinds of repulsive stuff yet as far as I know they are still chugging away.

I keep scrolling through my guide and thinking time after time - what is the audience for this crap?
There truly is a sucker born every minute I guess.
No wonder a doofus legacy like Dubya got over 40 million people to vote for him - twice.

(12,081 posts)are people who deserve just as much respect as you or I. And if you don't fart or have never picked your nose in your entire life then you must be better than the rest of us because almost every human on Earth has farted and picked their nose at some time in their life. And as far as the hillbilly part, there are good hillbillies and bad hillbillies just as there are good liberals and bad liberals. Where you grow up, how much money or education someone has has nothing to do with what kind of person someone is. And I still watch The Little Couple and My Big Fat Fabulous Life. And Abby and Brittany are fantastic young women. They are good role models and help break down stereotypes that people have about people with dwarfism, people with weight issues or with other medical abnormalities that leads to stereotypes and prejudice. There are good people in this world who just happen to be different than you or I. That does not make them bad. Just because Josh Duggar turned out to be a bad apple doesn't mean that all the people on all TLC shows are bad apples.

(904 posts)isn't the same as the other crazy shows. The couple are professionals, she's a Dr. and he's a business man and the show centers around their lives and how they manage in a world that isn't meant for adults 4ft. and under. It's also about their foreign adoption of 2 toddlers and I love it. There is no manufactured drama, just what appear to be real life situations of 2 people who love their adopted children and help them assimilate into a new culture and the world of regular size people.
