Meanwhile in Boston: Man shot by police was being followed by FBI terrorism task force
Before a Boston police officer and FBI agent shot and killed Usaama Rahim outside a Roslindale CVS Tuesday morning, the 26-year-old was approaching them with a military-style knife, Boston Police Commissioner William Evans said.
Rahim was being investigated by the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, he said.
“There was a level of alarm that brought us to question him today,” Evans said at a Tuesday afternoon press conference.
Rahim, of Roslindale, was under 24-hour surveillance, Boston FBI Special Agent in Charge Vincent Lisi said. Lisi would not comment on how long law enforcement had been monitoring Rahim, but Evans said it had been “going on for some time.”
“He was wanted for some terrorist info we had received,” Evans said, “as a result of that information our offices approached the individual for questioning. They hadn’t had their guns out. ... We have video depicting the individual coming at the officers as the officers are retreating.”
The video was obtained by a nearby business and will be released at the discretion of the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, a Boston police spokesman said.
Officials said eye-witnesses confirmed the account in the video.
Both Suffolk Country District Attorney Dan Conley’s office and the FBI’s Washington office are investigating the use of deadly force.
