Haven't used ignore or trash thread for over a decade, but the past month has been utterly detestable.
I encourage those opposed to ignore as I have been to try it out. You forget about it after awhile. You'll be able to actually enjoy this primary campaign.

(14,733 posts)But I've got 40 or so folks on ignore, so the board isn't too bad.

(72,790 posts)for a long time. And I like how you can trash threads by "keywords".
I like having those options.

(62,276 posts)Not sure what I could use to get rid of click bait titles though.

(9,610 posts)I used to ignore, but got rid of my list. Trash works pretty well.

(15,039 posts)Most of all, I use it to avoid simple stupidity -- drunken fools, whacked-out conspiracy nuts ("BushCo caused the tsunami"), one-note wonders who post the same drivel over and over. . . Other people may choose what they perceive as the "high road" of tolerance and community, but I've no time for blithering foolishness and no interest in useless poppycock. Some will disagree but I figure they must have a surplus of life.
There are some posters whose every other utterance is imbecilic, and those who delight in being boorish with no regard for raising the level of conversation or thought. These too I choose to ignore. And it's not something I do lightly: before I click, I'm convinced these people have nothing to offer -- no insight, no new perspective, nothing to change either my attitude or thought. And though I perceive I have an open mind, that's no reason to let others use it as a sewer.
I also utilize ignore to remove trolls and other unsavory folk from my experience. Oh, I recognize they may be gone by morning, but how much more pleasant the evening is without them. I've never blocked anyone who intelligently debated me, but I'll not suffer fools gladly or madly.
If it makes people feel better about the DU "family" or some other such fantasy, you can occasionally clear your entire Ignore list. I do. Often, I find many of those I've shut off were soon after tombstoned, so I don't feel I missed anything.

(62,276 posts)When I started I was afraid I would miss important comments, context of discussion, repeating points others may have made, just being disconnected. There are so many reasons to be hesitant.
But then I just started to see my interactions with certain people were always negative and they never contributed a half paragraph in substance. So I gotta agree with your post completely.

(29,503 posts)Life's short. If I'm going to spend precious time here, it's going to be on my terms (within DU's terms, of course).

(26,603 posts)I resisted Ignore until I finally realized that there are some DUers who really just make noise, seem motivated by a desire to irritate, have never said anything that I found interesting, and often generated OPs or long subthreads that I invariably skipped right past. A carefully tended ignore list, plus some carefully chosen trash-by-keyword terms, makes DU a cleaner and more useable space...

(62,276 posts)And now that you mention long subthreads I think my participation frequency in those threads has decreased since I started.

(38,958 posts)I am using both and I find it helps.
Life is too short to be irritated by irritating people.

(36,893 posts)I started to put more posters on ignore.
(Two for the price of one.)
Before that, my list was mainly populated by the MRA trolls.
I don't give arseholes the time of day in real life, so why should I here (and I am not talking about dems who have differing opinions)?

(18,115 posts)Easy as that, and it really will change your outlook. I use it liberally when topics are getting beat to death with repeated posts. I also use it to trash threads that are of no interest to me but are getting hundreds of replies.

(15,039 posts)that'll delete that thread from your experience.
To recover it, click on "My Account" at the top of page, then look for the Tab called "Trash Can." There you'll find a way to recover Trashed Threads, as well as learn how to Trash entire Forums and Groups, and how to Auto-Trash by Keyword. All useful features at various times.

(99,714 posts)I'm glad I didn't offend you.
I have put more people on ignore this week than I did in the previous twelve years I have been posting here...
Journeyman
(15,039 posts)Largely because I've been incredibly busy the past three months so I only read the articles and rarely delve into the comments. This may change in the coming weeks, as I have more time to read and engage with the comments.
And for what it's worth (and I'm hardly a paragon of posting here), but I don't remember ever having an issue with anything you've posted. In fact, quite the opposite.
