The heartbreaking call of a mighty sad basset hound is drifting over my neighborhood this evening. It is beautiful here, sunny, bright...lots of laughing kids playing in their yards with young moms running around trying to keep their eyes on another wild and wayward 4 year old.
You can smell barbecue in the air and, damn, it makes your mouth water when that smell drifts by. I feel a pang of jealousy knowing that we are having left-over pizza. Smelling other people's barbecue is a double-edged sword. Delicious and tangy, yet far away and cruelly someone else's dinner.
It is a perfect day here in the Pacific Northwest. Perfect.
Except the low, sad basset hound we keep hearing from across the street. One of my old ladies has passed away and left her aged basset hound Jimmy behind to sing his laments. It is low, and sad and you know he sat with his momma while she passed and he knows she isn't coming back.
When I moved here ten years ago there were many many old ladies on my block. I was the only "youngster" on the block and I was in my mid 30's. Everybody else was 80+. And one-by-one my neighbors have passed. The couples became widows, the widows slowly disappeared. Their kids came and cleaned out the houses. Many of them I had never seen before.
It is beautiful to hear laughing kids on the block now. All day long it is bad trumpet playing, and girls screaming at bugs, and screaming at dogs, and screaming at each other (holy cow little girls scream a LOT!).
But today I keep hearing Jimmy cry for his dead mom. And it makes me think of Carol and Cathy and Florence and Mildred and all of my neighbors who are gone since I've moved in.
I miss my friends and, man. do I feel sorry for Jimmy. You have never heard s such a cry of sadness from an animal. He is breaking my heart.
Call your moms, everybody, call your moms.

(4,359 posts)Just in case. I know they are going to sell the house so the dog might need a home.

Dogs are born with a natural love for humans.
I love my two mutts as much as anything in the world.

(6,119 posts)they don't like to be alone at all,,when my dad would go to work our Sam would put his muzzle down by the bottom of the door and howl for a while.
Please go bring him over to your house and take him in.. they don't live very long.
I hate to hear he went to a shelter.. I hope you or one of the neighbor takes him in.. they are such wonderful funny dogs, and easy to care for.. they are very kick back.

(46,585 posts)There is a rescue in my neck of the woods that rehomes orphaned dogs. They are usually of the older variety with such sadness in their eyes. Some really suffer with their grief.
Beautiful vignette. k&r

(1,203 posts)Your post is just beautiful. Hopefully Jimmy's mother will be waiting for him at the Rainbow Bridge, to cross over together.
Since I got laid off and only have had a work at home job for the last 3 years, my 12 year-old Candace is my constant companion. I was close to her before, but I'm amazed at how much closer we are. She hasn't been doing that well health-wise and I'm trying to prepare myself for losing her, but it's going to break my heart.

Older pets are often not adopted, sadly. Best to try to find a family for him.

(53,410 posts)And when I come home. We babysit him all the time so he feels at home with us. I'll stop and talk to him through the door or window and he calms right down and settles down.
Maybe you can go talk to the dog and see if that helps.

(4,359 posts)She was so cute walking her three basset hounds. Very sad when one day I saw she was only walking two. And then just Jimmy.
Sigh.

(205,537 posts)They are so confused, but respond so well with love and attention. They're hurting, too. My two became inseparable from the moment I brought the second one home. He'd been through a lot. I hope that Jimmy finds someone else to love him soon. He's going to need that.

One reason we did not replace him, nor do we intend to get any other birds. I don't want them to outlive me.
