(24,574 posts)I have seen this video before and it never fails to make me weep. Seeing Shirley free at last, and the joy of Jenny and Shirley at their reunion is simply awesome. Solomon James is a very special, caring person, and his relationship with and love for Shirley is such an important part of this story.
Thanks for posting, napkinz.

(24,574 posts)the abuse of elephants is getting a lot of attention. I hope it leads to the release of more and more Shirleys. You did a good part in keeping the light shining.

(36,926 posts)Grateful they are together again, but they never should have had to endure decades of slavery. Very glad Barnum and Bailey, then hopefully all circuses, are ending elephant "shows."

It's cruel, inhumane.
Elephants are incredibly intelligent, sentient beings, much more advanced than humans, imo. Humans are the brutes in this world, not the beautiful and innocent beings we exploit.
Thank goodness there are some kind humans, who work to repair the damage the vicious ones do to all the Shirleys out there, but there shouldn't be anything to repair. These wondrous beings should have been living for decades with their families in the wild.
Thank you for being there for elephants.
Now I'll have my cry.

(13,877 posts)trainer's mind about freedom and slavery. God bless him, too. What a beautiful smile.
Back to the ol' gals retiring with honor and each other...Life is now good.

(17,199 posts)incredible man, incredible story
I only wish we could free all the elephants confined (or perhaps I should say condemned) to such lives of misery.
Poor Shirley was injured by another elephant slave in the circus. Those horrendous conditions would drive many into aggression, a trait that, in the wild, is practically non-existent to elephants.

(17,199 posts)can we finally do away with zoos and circuses?
MoonRiver
(36,926 posts)their "iconic" (OMG) elephant shows. I hope all other circuses around the world follow suit. Zoos should go too, but that is more complicated I think.

(36,926 posts)I believe California, or part of it, has banned use of all wild animals for entertainment. Hope this idea spreads, fast.

(11,441 posts)Travel. Circus. Abuse. Decades alone. Thank God Shirley at least had Solomon caring for her. And that she now has good people, lots of green space, and fellow elephants, especially Jenny.
Big Apple Circus stopped using elephants in 2000 or so. Ringling Brothers will phase out the use of elephants in a couple of years (not fast enough!). I saw ads for some sort of Soul Circus coming to Raleigh and read that there were allegations of elephant abuse, so I hope they do the right thing and stop exploiting these animals. And if they don't chose to do the right thing, that they are FORCED to do the right thing.

(17,199 posts)her story has a happy ending, but for so many other elephants, there is no savior like Solomon, no "free at last" from confinement and cruelty
we can't depend on the compassion of a few good people ... we need the law to right this wrong
