WASHINGTON -- When Miles Jai Thomas arrived at a party at the Craig Ranch North Community Pool in McKinney, Texas, on Friday night, the pool was open to everyone -- until a security guard showed up and removed black partygoers from the area.
Then he started making up rules to keep us out, Thomas, 15, told The Huffington Post.
A white woman at the pool started making racist comments, Thomas said, such as telling black teens at the party to get used to the bars outside the pool because thats all they were going to see.
Grace Stone, 14, who is white, told BuzzFeed News that she and friends objected to an adult woman making racist comments to other teens at the party and that the woman turned violent. ...................(more)

(38,187 posts)that is honestly all I can think of to try to answer your question. Suburban white Americans love black athletes in high school and on up through college and pro....unless they start dating a white girl, then it's special PTA meetings and hoopla over nothing. So, sports, but even that is iffy. That's the only thing I can come up with.
It's a damn shame. Black kids don't stand a chance. I hope most of them can sue, but especially the girl in the swim suit. She was very obviously unarmed and not a threat. So were the other kids in the video. They were just kids who wanted to join a party they heard about, but she got really roughed up and kneed in the back. That had to have hurt. The guy the other two cops brought back had blood in his mouth.

Anyone who attempts to play the 'good cop' card is a cop fluffing apologist.
There isn't a SINGLE good cop that's been on patrol for longer than one shift who isn't complicit in this corruption!
The day I begin reading LBN stating that a cop has officially reported misconduct/assault by a fellow officer on a detained citizen is the day MY attitude on the subject will change.
Until then, I few EVERY cop with trust that is reluctantly placed in their authority to protect and serve...
qwlauren35
(6,148 posts)the good cops who rat on the bad cops get killed.
I have a memory about a story (FICTION) I read where there was a woman cop who refused to "play nice". One night the other cops invited her to hang out with them. She thought it was a breakthrough. Instead they drugged her, raped her and beat her to death. There were cops who didn't participate, but they kept quiet.
I have no idea what pressure cops may be under to keep quiet about the nastiness of other cops. But I think it runs very, very deep.
When the death of Freddie Gray was inciting Baltimore, I talked to a cop's wife and she was very non-committal. I then talked to a Congresswoman, and she was very calm. She said "you have to change the culture of policing so that it's safe to identify bad cops".
I think that is what Loretta Lynch is trying to do. But it will be a while before we see results, and in the meantime, more people will die.

It's only natural to want to run from someone who seems to have a chip on their shoulder and seems awfully out of control. And the cop used way too much force, and deserves strong disciplinary action or getting fired, imo. Looks like this is another instance of cops needing training.
Whether or not the kids were supposed to be at the pool is questionable. Private neighborhood pools aren't open to the public, and I've read that they weren't supposed to be there which is why the cops kept telling them to leave.
I would bet that a couple of the kids lived in the neighborhood and invited their friends over not realizing they could only invite a limited number of guests. Our family can only invite four guests at a time - up from three a few years ago.
MohRokTah
(15,429 posts)TexasMommaWithAHat

Disgusting
TexasMommaWithAHat
(3,212 posts)but McKinney is not. It's only about eleven percent black, which is why I figured that many African American kids probably didn't all live in that neighborhood.
However, if the pool does "sell" birthday sessions, then they would have had a right to be there as guests.
TexasMommaWithAHat
(3,212 posts)Last edited Sun Jun 7, 2015, 09:37 PM - Edit history (1)
You can't rent the pool and hire your own lifeguards in every neighborhood I've lived in, but we could never have more than 3 or 4 guests when the pool was open to the neighborhood.
If this pool does sell birthday party sessions, and all the kids were invited, then they would have had a right to be there. If that's true - no brainer!
Ugh - ETA - that should be "You CAN rent the pool..."
jaysunb
(11,856 posts)"birthday sessions". Our HOA rules say that you can only have three guest at the pool or in the common area. But....if you are having a larger party, all you need to do is advise the other residents by posting on the community mail box and letting the management company know. (inviting all 36 homeowners doesn't hurt. ) Very simple.
I've been here nearly 20 years and have seen everything from teen parties to wedding receptions. And yes, there were a couple times the cops had to be called. As a matter of fact I called at least once myself.
But there is absolutely no excuse for what happened in McKinney.
TexasMommaWithAHat
(3,212 posts)and I've lived in a few neighborhoods with community pools, and all had strict rules whether we lived in very modest neighborhoods or nicer neighborhoods.

(11,076 posts)...that the young woman giving the party had passes of her own and that she was given passes by other residents. I'm guessing they were from neighbors and friends. They were planning a cookout.
gollygee
(22,336 posts)not in my town but in the next town over, and people can buy passes to have a birthday party there. You don't rent the pool, but if you have 15 guests you pay a certain amount per pass and buy that many so you can have a party there. And I could do it even though I don't live in that town. It's a way to get funding to help pay for the pool. They could have a program like that going.
TexasMommaWithAHat
(3,212 posts)We call it a community pool, but it's a private pool owned and run by the neighborhood association and is closed to the public. Over the last 30 years, I've belong to several as we've moved here and there, and I've never heard of being able to invite more than two to four guests at one time. Sometimes, it is possible to rent the whole pool for a private party, in which case we have to pay for the lifeguards.
I think the teens believed they were invited, but I'm not sure that the by-laws would have allowed for so many, so I'm sure the locals were surprised. Add in the racist rants by one or two women, and all hell seemed to have broken loose.
I could imagine their confusion.
gollygee
(22,336 posts)and you can look for the other thread about it - I'm sure it's still on GD. Some of the kids were residents, and they each had a few guest passes, and they each gave their guest passes to a few friends. They were totally entitled to be there. In fact, most of the kids were actually residents.
