Assholes like this are why we can't have nice things.
The first time I saw GoodFellas, on a rented Blockbuster videotape in 1991, I was in a daze as the final credits rolled. If I had been a cartoon character, I would have had stars dancing around my head like Wile E. Coyote. I turned to my girlfriend and said, Whatd you think?
Boy movie, she declared and I knew our relationship was doomed.
Just kidding. (We split up because I was a jerk.) But women dont get GoodFellas. Its not really a crime drama, like The Godfather. Its more of a male fantasy picture Entourage with guns instead of swimming pools, the Rat Pack minus tuxedos.

(6,399 posts)A lot of good pushback.
I know, NYPost. What do you expect.
But there's plenty of dialogue that gets generated by this on film sites where editors are calling him out on his BS, which helps to lift all boats in a way.

(14,255 posts)Plus - Best Soundtrack Ever (I award that a lot, truth be told.). I read somewhere (Esquire, maybe) that Scorsese had the entire soundtrack in his head before starting to film, and was responsible for all the music. And - spoiler alert for those who do not watch this type of movie - Joe Pesci - do you NEVER learn?
Sort of a cross between Godfather and Casino.

(3,937 posts)Women understand 'frien-emies.' They understand difficult relationships very well. Perhaps a better headline for this is "Goodfellas-Loving Writer Incapable of Understanding Women"
I love the GF parody at 1:08 in this:

(41,998 posts)I never think of movies like that. I like revenge movies and can't stand most romances. "GoodFellas" was pretty good--not my favorite, I'd take "Reservoir Dogs" over it any day, but I remember it being violent and funny and a good tale.
A strange analysis. I agree--the writer is an asshole.

(6,399 posts)She can't stand the romance or rom-com material. I love 'em. I've got a wide range of tastes, so I'll watch nearly anything (prefer to judge for myself anyway), but she's more interested in the action stuff than the romance stuff.
Good movies are good movies in the end.

(41,998 posts)My problem with romances isn't the genre, it's that there is usually some painfully awkward set up in them that makes me cringe. If they're well done, it's ok. Some movies are beautifully shot, well acted and absolutely compelling to watch, but somehow seem soulless to me. "No Country For Old Men" was like that.
Of course I like horror like the "Hellraiser" series and first three "Blade" movies so I'm clearly no connoisseur, despite my propensity for Taurintino movies.

(43,189 posts)And I'm a man. And I enjoy a good mob movie or TV show. (The Sopranos is in my top three television dramas of all time.)
Here's my problem with Goodfellas. There are no likeable characters in the film. None. I hated every single main character in the movie. They had no redeemable characteristics at all.
Same can be said for another Scorsese film, The Wolf of Wall Street. Again, it was well-written, well-acted, well-directed. But I found every character in that movie extremely odious, especially the main one.
When a movie has zero redeemable or likable characters in them, it has a tendency to lose me. Even with a main character who on the surface is a despicable criminal, such as Tony Soprano or Walter White, if there's some tiny shred of humanity in that character, it will draw me in. But absent that, you've lost me as to why I should care about that person.
Right now I'm a season and a half into House of Cards and I have to admit I find nothing likeable or sympathetic about Frank or Claire Underwood. Thankfully, some of the side characters do come off more likeable. (Although nothing good seems to happen to them.)
