Shame on the Obama administration for unfairly accusing Maryland Gov. Martin OMalley of hypocrisy over immigration.
OMalley (D) deserves applause and support, not misleading White House leaks, for urging Americans to provide decent temporary housing for the tens of thousands of young migrants who have fled violence and poverty in Central America.
The governor still has to deliver, of course. He needs to follow through on his stated desire for Maryland to do its part by placing hundreds of the youths in foster care or other accommodations in the state.
But indications are that OMalley is genuinely committed to doing the right thing. His humanitarian appeal has contrasted starkly with Obamas emphasis on speeding up deportations of the youths, even at risk of trampling their legal rights to asylum.
OMalley was smeared by an anonymously sourced CNN report last week that clearly originated in the White House. It noted that OMalley had resisted placing youths in a vacant military facility in Westminster, northwest of Baltimore.
The implication was clear: OMalley talks big but wont deliver if his own back yard is affected.
It was a bum rap.

O'Malley was trying to find good temporary housing for the young migrants. Maryland did eventually accept more than their share of them. The smear from the Whitehouse occurred after O'Malley criticized Obama's handling of the surge in young migrants from central America last year.

(45,527 posts)1. Maryland ended up housing more of the refugees per captia.
O'Malley and Maryland did a better job than the White House.

He is the only candidate that speaks convincingly about the well-being and dignity of immigrants as something that matters.

at what can be done to help and tackles problems differently than many politicians. He seems to be results/improvement oriented. He's a very capable executive.
