France steps up privacy pressure on Google

French regulators have ordered Google GOOG, -0.57% to expand a privacy-protection rule to all domain names, not just those in France. The order, issued Friday, is related to the European "right to be forgotten", which allows individuals to demand that search engines remove links to pages in results of searches on their names. So far, Google has taken down only results on its European domains, such as Google.fr, the CNIL said in a statement. The watchdog has now given the company 15 days to extend the process to searches on Google.com and other of its non-European sites, or face a sanction.
