Dallas police found bags with explosives after a shootout involving multiple attackers at their headquarters early on Saturday morning. Officials were also locked in a standoff with at least one suspected gunmen who they believed was involved in the earlier attack.

Officials were investigating four suspicious bags that had been "spread out all over police headquarters," one of which contained a pipe bomb, Police Chief David Brown told reporters. Nearby residents were being evacuated, he said.

Up to four suspects began shooting at their headquarters with automatic weapons at around 12:30 a.m. (1:30 a.m. ET), Brown told reporters.

"We saw multiple suspects firing guns at police headquarters," Brown said. "The suspects were parked in front."

12:30pm UPDATE:
The Paris Police Department says a man considered armed and considered dangerous after he obtained firearms, ammo, and body armor and then threatened violence against his family, churches, and schools has been apprehended by sheriff's deputies in Paris Wednesday morning.

Paris Police Chief Bob Hundley says the Lamar County Sheriff's Office took James Boulware into custody in the 1700 block of Lamar Avenue around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.

"At 11:24 A.M. on May 1, 2013, James Lance Boulware was observed leaving his residence in the 1300 block of Fairfax by a Lamar County Deputy. Boulware was followed until back up could arrive and stopped by Paris Police Officers along with the Lamar County Deputies in the 1900 block of Lamar Ave. where he was taken into custody without incident on two felony warrants out of Dallas County. Boulware was transported to the Lamar County Jail. No weapons were located in Boulware’s vehicle," Hundley said in a press release Wednesday afternoon.

The company that sold it, Jenco Sales Inc., described the vehicle on Facebook: "Zombie Apocalypse Assault Vehicle and Troop Transport. This full armored zombie busting vehicle features convenient gun ports so no zombie juice touches you during a mass zombie take down. It also has benches in the back so you can take turns resting during long Zombie sieges. The tactical step boards are installed for when you only need swords and axes for drive by mow downs. The bumpers are made of reinforced steel tubing, so no dents from smashing zombie heads! It's full armor plated and has bullet proof windows just in case you run into other zombie hunting hordes who might try to take this bad boy from you. Like anything, there is a price attached to this fine piece of zombie fighting machinery."

To recap, a suspect opened fire on Dallas police headquarters around 12:30 am CT. Police returned fire, and then the suspect rammed a police car and drove off. The suspect was chased to a parking lot in Hutchins, Texas, which is about 12 miles south of Dallas, NBC News reports. Police Chief David O. Brown said SWAT snipers shot at the suspect through the windshield of his van after a standoff and a robot is being sent in to confirm the suspect's condition. Four suspicious bags were found at headquarters, and police say the suspect claimed that his van was rigged with explosives. No officers or civilians were injured in the shooting or standoff, Brown said. -

The Associated Press is reporting that authorities confirmed the death of the Dallas police headquarters attack suspect. Dallas police said they have not confirmed the suspect's death and cannot do so until the van is cleared. However, they do believe the gunman's death is likely.

Suspect in Dallas police headquarters believed dead from sniper shot

The suspect in an attack on Dallas police headquarters is believed to be dead after a police sniper shot at him early Saturday.

So far, though, authorities had not been able to approach the vehicle safely to confirm that he had been killed.

They were working to make their way into the vehicle with the assistance of a robot, and they alerted the public that some planned detonations might be heard as they tried to gain entry.

Police had spent hours trying to negotiate with the man in the armored vehicle he used during his assault on the headquarter before he led dozens of squad cars on a chase that ended along Interstate 45 in Hutchins.

No one was injured by the man, who identified himself as James Boulware, a 50-year-old with a history of family violence...
