Happy

I have read, both here and on other internet sites, a number of Good People who are disappointed with the impeachment trial. Some believe the Democrats should have called witnesses. Others can't believe that the republicans were so cowardly. I'd like to take a couple of minutes, if I could, to try to put things in a different context.

For those fortunate enough to not be familiar with me, let me begin by noting that I am on the tip of the left wing of the Democratic Party. During the trial, I was visited by two friends: one a former member of the Weathermen (now a doctor), and a young man who likes to be further to the left than me. I try to make him understand that isn't actually so -- I just prefer to stick to things that can be accomplished.

I make no claims to being accomplished myself. But there are a couple of things that I do know about: boxing and digging ditches for the foundations for houses by hand. In my youth, the two merged, as digging ditches is great training for fighting. By no coincidence, I pulled out and old scrapbook before starting this essay, and found the 1974 article my late friend Rubin Carter wrote for a boxing magazine. In it, Rubin notes that things such as justice and democracy require constant struggle.

It's not a fight that you win and that's it. Rather, it is only after one recognizes that it is constant that one can find true peace of mind. And that is exactly the peace of mind that allows you the strength to keep up The Good Fight. And we won more rounds in this week's impeachment trial than they did. Just like after most fights, you can tell by looking who won the fight, I dare say we left some lumps and bruises on the republicans. There are none on us. And the judges scored it 57 to 43 for us.

Now back to digging ditches to put in foundations for houses. Rubin had worked for a construction company early in his boxing career. I have photos from 1963 with Rubin working with a shovel. He taught me a good workout with a shovel that helps in boxing. Now, I was always digging in the hardpan and rocks of rural upstate New York, so I needed that peace of mind to even get started on a job.

In 2018, we saw a lot of people picking up their shovels and pickaxes and start on an essential job. We won back control of the House. In 2020, we all had our shovels and pickaxes and ballots, and now we have the House, the Senate, and the White House. Now that is a solid foundation to build upon. And this week, we saw the House managers build a beautiful room upon that solid foundation. But we aren't through, because justice and democracy require constant struggle.

Yes, it would have been very nice if the republican Senators all voted to convict the orange man who lacks convictions. But did anyone actually think there was even a tiny chance of that? No rational person could. It isn't in their nature. Don't put the bar too high. Remember that all important victories are the result of long, hard work and dedication.

This week was huge for Democrats, and horrible for republicans. Let's make the weeks and months ahead even better for us, and more terrible for them.

Peace,
H2O Man

Life is good! It's been cold up here, and I haven't gotten outside as much as I like. But I did take my son's puppy for a walk through the snow today, to where about six deer sleep on the lawn at night, and on to the fields and woods. She likes tracking the deer until we get close, and she is anxious when her eyes meet theirs. Then she turns and runs -- her jumps elevating, much higher than my old bones take me.

I was aware that the Trump legal team had planned to try to paint Rep. Raskin as a "radical leftist." After his opening, they had to take time for Schoen to change his sppech, including changing the order of the two speakers. I've had a very high opinion of Raskin for some time, but it increased this week. All the managers were outstanding.

Invictus

by William Ernest Henley

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.

One of my favorites requires three things: a shovel, a wheelbarrow, and a very large pile of gravel. Shovel 15 good shovels full of gravel into the wheelbarrow, grab it, and run. While shoveling, you can plant your feet in place, move around, or mix it up. This prepares you to fire 15 good punches, tie the opponent up, and move him back into the ropes. Repeat, over and over and over.

Also, using a cross-cut saw, then an ax, and end up with a load of fire wood. The funny thing is that my father had us doing that stuff any how! Young people today usually think of that as old school, and prefer fancy gym equipment. But that old school way got us in good shape!

They could've held a trial. Public opinion could've forced GOP assholes to vote guilty, or at least made them look so shitty for voting not guilty that we could easily vote them out in 2022 and beyond. We could have and should have had weeks of testimony from cops who lost their eyes, fingers, or the families of the cops who died.

Clinton impeachment trial went on over 30 days. And he wasn't removed.

They should've let the truth come out and let the American people decide for themselves.

Democrats are just weak when it comes to standing up to the GOP.

This decision means the nightmare isn't over.

It just gives 45 a chance to recharge.

"Democrats are just weak when it comes to standing up to the GOP."

No. Just no. In fact, hell no. There was absolutely nothing weak about the impeachment managers or the case they put on.

As I said in another thread tonight, they were playing with a deck that was stacked against them, and they knew it. In a courtrom, there is a thing called jury selection, wherein both sides get to screen potential jurors in order to weed out those who are biased, those who already have their minds made up, those who have a vested interest in the outcome. In a Senate impeachment trial, there is no jury selection. The makeup of the jury is already set in stone. That's why everyone who is in the business of predicting such things accurately predicted the outcome of this trial: aquittal.

Weak would be the House not bothering to impeach since no one expected a conviction. But that's not what happened. The House DID impeach, because it was the right thing to do. The impeachment managers put on a strong and powerful case, because that was the right thing to do. The ONLY "weak" people in that Senate chamber were the GOP Senators who voted to acquit.

If you want to disagree with any of the tactics used by the Democrats, feel free. I think that's fair game. But calling Jamie Raskin and the others (https://www.cnn.com/interactive/2021/02/politics/house-impeachment-managers/) "weak" is where I have to draw the line. There is absolutely NOTHING "weak" about any of those people. They are the poster kids for "strong."

Look up "strong" in the dictionary, This picture should be next to it.

Then they stood up to the GOP and said they were going to call witnesses.

But in 45 minutes they backed right the fuck down.

This morning when they said they would call witnesses and the other side were freaking out I told my husband, "The GOP is just not used to being in the minority." But that isn't true. The Democrats are not used to being in the majority.

They held all the cards and they folded anyway.

So don't go on a tear and get mad at me for thinking it was weak.

I don't need your bullshit on top of already feeling really low about this.

44. This week, I went

to a doctors appointment. Seeking to take all focus and attention off of myself, I expertly shifted the conversation to politics. She told me about the number of people they see there, suffering from increased anxiety, depression, and stress. She said that includes a lot of children, because of Covid, and hostilities that have separated families, neighbors, friends, etc, due to the social-political stressors.

If a person has a health scare, it causes serious stress. And we are entering our second year of a constant scary health crisis. Many have been sick, and too many have died. And it's not just the virus. My brother died in January, and I see how hard it is for extended families to deal with the wide variety of issues that arise. Add to that, there's idiots refusing to wear a mask, People who are rude in parking lots. And a vicious, organized attack on our government.

So I understand people feeling down. Yes, I do. We are facing the reality of our political opposition deciding to use weapons to settle differences, as a military force. We are the party of rational thought, of non-violence, advocating for a just society. So people are going to get tired and discouraged.

People can only do the best that they can. And that's the great advantage of having a big team -- when some people are tited or discouraged, they can rest. For we have many different levels of talents, time, and energy. I wish that I had the energy that I did as a young man. But I don't. So I try to contribute as a tired and grumpy old man.

Being a tired and grumpy old man, I find benefit from reading Martin Luther King, Jr., Gandhi, and other inspirational leaders. Lately, I've been looking at the Gospel of Matthew, which is interesting for a number of reasons. For one, there are a series of quotes that sound mighty similat to Buddhism. A person might conclude that Truth is Truth, in both space and time. I also like that scholars think that it includes sayings from the hypothetical source Q, and also A. (Such manuscripts don't exist, of course, because they are from oral traditions among non-literate followers.) There are sixteen of those quotes in thay gospel, with some repetetion. For example, Jesus repeatedly says, "Do not be afraid," which is actually another way of saying that we must find peace of mind before we can bring about peaceful resolutions to the world's human problems.

We'll talk more soon. It's almost 2 am, and old men often become tired-er and grumpier after midnight.

48. Consequences.
Sun Feb 14, 2021, 05:48 PM
Feb 2021

I'm not a fan of Mitch McConnaloid, but I had to partially agree with him when he said this: &quot Trump) hasn't gotten away with anything -- yet." On one hand, that is bullshit, because he got away with numerous things, starting with his 2016 behaviors, with the Ukraine, and on and on. But he is going to be facing some consequences now, as a private criminal, er, um, citizen. There are both criminal and civil cases awaiting the old boy.

Now, per "Democrats" ..... we have to remember there is a large range of Democratic Party politicians in Washington, DC. Each individual, in fact, has within them some progressive traits, mixed in with liberal, centrist, and conservative traits and values. I will speculate that people's responses to various stimuli tends to follow general patterns -- depending on what mixture of progressive, liberal, centrist, and/or conservative traits they have.

Let's take an example. For some reason, the attack on the Capitol comes to mind. I think we can agree that had to be on a range from uncomfortable to frightening for every person there for a good reason -- the politicians, their aides, the workers, and the police. What we might focus on is the immediate responses up to 48 hours later, compared to three weeks later. The Democrats were solid in recognizing both Trump's central role, and the need to hold him accountable. Right?

But by the time of the trial, there were differences of opinion within the party about issues, including the calling of witnesses. Quite a bit of the party's leadership, including in the White House, were opposed to calling witnesses. By mid-week, they knew which republicans were entrenched and unwill to vote to convict. So when Raskin announced he wanted to call a witness, he was giving voice to the progressive wing. That resulted in the "time out" and Senators going into a huddle.

It was up to leadership to determine the next step. Now, the simple truth is that calling witnesses offered potential benefits and negatives. In my opinion -- and I understand exactly why others may disagree, but I am basing my opinion on my rather shallow understanding of politics -- having Trump's legal team allow the information to be introduced, though not testified to, was the est of the potential outcomes. I think it was, in fact, what Rep. Raskin had in mind from the giddy-up. He played them. Just my opinion.

Now, what does that do, in the larger, national sense? It helps document the Truth, without the clutter of lies and bullshit the Trump team would have introduced. It avoided meaningful distraction, and put important information on the record. The public gets to see it on television, and read about it in the news. They know it is important, because it ruffled republican feathers, and put the legal chihuahuas' tails between their legs.

It is a further blow to the wedge that is dividing the republican party at the seams -- the cult vs the "regular" republicans. Those regulars did vote for Trump in 2020, but events since then insure that they want him removed from their party. Plenty of republicans have already left their party since November. We do not want them to become Democrats. That would damage our party severely. But we do want to splinter their party. And in such situations, one does best to strike while the iron is hot.

And that, my Wonderful Little Sister, is exactlywhy I'm saying we all need to don our blacksmith's gear.

We need investigations, indictments, prosecutions, convictions, and incarcerations. Nothing less is adequate.

Years ago, the county hired a firm to put up a new building for the mental health clinic's Day Treatment Program. I visited the site with the director of community services one summer afternoon, when they were putting in the foundation. I told her that it wasn't nearly deep enough, and that as a result, the roof would leak in the spring. It did leak. A lot.

While the arrests of the insurrectionists are satisfying, there's a lot more to be unearthed. We need tenacious people who will do the work and people in leader positions to be willing to let them finish.

I had to hand dig the foundations for my house and garage, but I only had to go down 30 inches here in Kentucky. I'd hate to dig a foundation in New York. Sandstone is the toughest rock I had to deal with during the digging. I did buy a hammer drill to make it easier for the latest extension to my garage -- it's wooden posts on concrete piers.

I hear you. And I have shared that for over 50 years, too.

In boxing, I learned to harness those destructive internal forces -- anger and fear -- to use to my full advantage in delivering a destructive force in the ring. And I would be outright lying if I attempted to claim that I don't experience those feelings gurgling up inside of me, as if I was a young guy, getting ready to enter that ring to fight. In fact, I've had that feeling frequently from 2020 to now, and it is usually a comfortable, warm feeling. I'm lucky it passes though, as I'm old and in no hurry to fight again! Ha!

23. Brilliant as usual. This week was a great week for Democrats.

Next week will be a great week for Democrats.

Soon we will pass the most popular legislation in 50 years. When Covid 19 stimulus passes at the same time Covid vaccines start rolling out in big numbers and Covid infections drastically fall a new optimism will become infectious. By July we will return to normal life and there will be a lot of pent up discretionary spending.

In the meantime Trump and company will start facing a cascading waterfall of depositions, both criminal and civil. Trump will eventually get on a plane to Abu Dhabi to escape the legal avalanche coming his way. That is why he became so desperate to remain in office, it provided immunity.

Decades from now people will see this as the beginning of a good age where the US economy started pursuing a Green New Deal and internal combustion engines became the endangered species.

Just as no one in the Middle Ages perceived that they were in the MA, nor expected the Spanish Inquisition, no one thinks they are in the Good Old Days at the time.

Twenty years from now we will be watching the 10 anniversary of the Rock Opera "Trump American Facist in his Own Words" and we will laugh until tears roll out when Trump's defense team sings that "I had to change my opening because the House Managers were so good" or "Don't impeach him, indict and imprison him".

Up next? Justice, Fulton County GA, Style.

These will someday be known as "The Good Old Days".

I'm comforting myself, too, with the thought of how each of our Democratic candidates will be able to use their Republican opponent's vote to acquit Trump against them during their future campaigns. All they'll have to do is roll the footage of the insurrection and point out "My opponent thinks this is perfectly acceptable behavior!"

Everything you said is true.

I am sure people who voted for the orange menace, but not cult members, were impacted by the presentation the managers brought forth. They may have a hard time voting R in the future.

We do have the younger generation with us. If they can remain engaged, I like the country’s chances.

The GOP are like Buicks, they are past their time. Buick is at least trying to rehabilitate themselves, the GOP decided to become a cult. Plus, most of them are dying off both to age and stupidity in the pandemic.

The future has shades of brightness and if we do the right thing for people, and learn how to communicate our message, we will prevail.

Today’s decision sucks, but a large majority, not 67%, but 57% voted him guilty. The polling of the public is even higher. The tide is turning, and they are afraid of the inevitable.

And kudos and jealousy, that you knew Hurricane Carter. His jury sucked, too.

Peace

This has been a years-long emotional roller coaster for so many of us and it’s easy to lose perspective and get discouraged. Our House Managers were nothing short of brilliant. Their hard work and eloquence were a gift to our country and we should all be so very proud of them.

You are right about the struggle - it is ongoing and there is never a time we can rest on our laurels - evil never takes a day off. The ditch digging analogy is a good one to keep in mind.

(Btw, I had the privilege of meeting Rubin Carter after a talk he gave some years ago while doing promo tours for “The Hurricane.” His strength and perseverance were an example of never giving up and we can’t be discouraged or give up either.) Onward...

46. Always Fight the Good Fight

When we fight the good fight
We may win or we may lose
But if we don't even try
Loss is what we choose

You are quite right, my friend. This struggle is constant and there is no final victory, at least as far as our eyes can see.

Impeaching the orange creature was not only the right thing to do; it was an absolutely necessary thing to do -- even though acquittal by the Senate was fairly certain from the start.

To ignore a serious crime is to tacitly condone it, and this crime represented an existential threat to the foundations of our democracy. If our Democratic leadership chose not to even try to impeach this POtuS they would have chosen a LOSS with potentially dire consequences for our country.

During the last four years and especially the conclusion of it we have stood on the edge of the abyss. We cannot avoid that dark fate by simply standing in place; a constant struggle is required to prevent being pulled down into it.

As I'm sure you know, the Good Fight is almost never a perfect fight. We make mistakes and take our lumps, but get up off the mat with an indomitable spirit and determination to continue on with the necessary struggle.

We stay strong as long as we keep working that shovel, moving that gravel, and fighting the Good Fight.

Peace, H2O Man. We need you, just as we all need each other.
