Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), running for the Democratic nomination for the presidency, wants to amend the 1964 Civil Rights Act to include gay and transgender people, assuring a federal law that would ban discrimination in employment, housing, public accommodations, education and all spheres of American life, with no broad religious exemption. In 1996, he was one of only 67 House members to vote against the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which President Bill Clinton signed into law.

(67,112 posts)world about equality, freedom and all ... but then exceptions are made as to whom that applies. This, would be an excellent step in the right direction. Equal should mean equal. NOT, Equality means applying to only certain groups.

(45,319 posts)Amending the Civil Rights Act to include LGBT people is more effective and inclusive of more areas of discrimination than the current ENDA.
41 years and 1 month ago, Representatives Bella Abzug and Ed Koch introduced The Equality Act which sought to offer all the protections included in the Civil Rights Act to LGBT persons. Of course it did not pass and over the years we wound up with ENDA, which is Employment only and does not cover housing or services. ENDA got watered down to exclude trans people and the discussion then came back to making a fully inclusive ENDA. But what we really need is the whole enchilada as offered in The Equality Act, which is the same enchilada as the one in the Civil Rights Act.
So Bernie's vision is of a complete and total equality, which was, is and will remain the objective until that objective is won.
