Do you consider this man simply a murderer, like other people who murder say, their spouse or boss or a random stranger they've mugged?
Thanks for answering.
the band leader
(139 posts)He sat there in that church for an hour, wrestling with his demons and then, ultimately, made his choice to murder 9 fully innocent human beings. what kind of a message does it send to other would be perpetrators of heinous crimes who are wrestling with similar demons if we provide special protective treatment to a person such as this? people like this should not be given special protective treatment. The purpose of criminal punishment is to deter criminals, not to reward them with protection and the infamy they seek. At the very least, he should not be protected in any way shape or form.

(115,677 posts)Why would you want to do that since you are indicating you don't?
Bonus question. Should thieves get their hand chopped off?
the band leader
(139 posts)And that will incite other similarly evil people to carry out other similarly evil acts. What kind of message does it send to would be psycopaths when you literally protect them for carrying out their evil deeds? The wrong message for sure. The fear of God no longer serves to restrain the evil in men's heart. And now, in a world without the fear of punishment, there is nothing left to fear, nothing left to stop evil fucks like Dylan Roof from acting on their psychotic desires.
uppityperson
(115,677 posts)cutting off a hand if someone steals. Should we do that also?
the band leader
(139 posts)I'm sorry, but we're not talking about thieves, we're talking about a man who walked into a church and murdered 9 people. I think I'll stay on topic.

(29,322 posts)In theory, reality is a different story -- especially for prison and protective custody. Often those with sex charges are in PC but with corrupt guards & prisoners requesting transfer to get to you (and also turned down if you are at risk because of the common problem with this) -- you definitely don't want to go prison as a "snitch" or you'll never be safe but they do put some other murderers in prison, especially the ones with noteriety Plus with them overcrowded as is it is difficult to find room to house them in a special unit. Familiar with Arizona's private prison system, I'm aware how ugly it can get. Just a lot of cruelty from the lawmakers, voters, law enforcement, and the profiteers all-the-way-around.

(370 posts)To be fair, no one has harmed me as much as this man just harmed the members of this church. Not even close. But I still find it hard to forgive people. But I have harmed other people, and I find it even harder to forgive myself. I understand the feeling of revenge on this guy. If he did this to me or people I know, I would probably feel them. However, at the same, I dont think revenge is helpful to humanity. That is despite the fact that I will fully admit to feeling the need for revenge myself. However, intellectually, I wish I didn't feel it, because it accomplishes nothing. Making this guy live in conditions of torture doesn't help humanity. I understand why you feel this way. But think harder about the reasons behind it, and if it really makes humanity any better.

(29,322 posts)Just remember it as an excuse from a warden why inmates in protective custody are victims of assault or more (Maryland IIRC). Not only can a prison guard who is at the bottom of the totem pole of law enforcement when it comes to pay and benefits can easily be corrupted, if someone wants him & has the money they can pay this guard to either make the transfer or open one door -- leave the other door open or do the assault or murder themselves though you never know sometimes. I'm still suspicious on how the Phoenix-area serial shooter died from a prescription drug overdose. Things can be covered up very easily.

(111,302 posts)I'd hate to see him in the general population for two reasons: first, he'd spread his racist poison and second, he'd be a target for predators.
Instead of solitary (which is torture), put him in with the other terrorists we've managed to catch and put away. They can while away the rest of their rotten lives unable to do it again, too toxic to associate even with thieves.
A life spent in idleness and frustration, locked away from anyone who might get out someday, is punishment enough.
Kalidurga
(14,177 posts)and Roof is going to have a harsh life either in the gen pop or in solitary. It will probably be the gen pop, he won't be well liked. He seems very much the loner so I don't see him forming alliances easily. I think he is going to end up spending a lot of time in the infirmary. I don't think he will be murdered, murder is still kind of rare in prison even with a lot of notoriety. Fights are very common though. I do think people will take swipes at him as they can get away with it. I suspect if he is allowed to stay in his cell except for meals and showers that is where he will be most of the time.

(5,704 posts)But at 21, and am so sorry as I am in the victims corner. how does the system rehabilitate rather than punish. I am so conflicted right now. Am in the victims corner but at the same time, who taught this child to be so racial against people of colour that he went into a Church and gunned down 9 people. Makes me think he was not thinking, it is so sad. Church is sacred even though through the years I have become skeptical but I believe in a superior being!
No matter how you look at it, it is heart breaking. Why do people need to have guns?
gwheezie
(3,580 posts)And house him where it would be safest for him and the other inmates. Every human has a capacity for redemption, that does not mean he is a free man but as long as he's living, he can come to terms with what he's done and ask for forgiveness from the people he harmed.
I cannot in my wildest imagination comprehend doing what he has done so I don't have any idea what is the punishment that would cause him suffering, so I must not wish for suffering but for hope he comes to an understanding of what he has done. And he does not leave prison or harm anyone else.
The people he killed are dead. The right thing to be done was to kill him before he did such evil, to stop it. But they are dead, killing him now does not go back in time. This has nothing to do with his acts, but has to do with our own humanity.
If it was my family killed, I honestly don't know if I'd feel the same way. I hope I would.
