Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton made a stirring plea for "common-sense" gun control Saturday.
"The passing of days has not dulled the pain or shock of this crime," Clinton said, in her most extensive comments yet on the tragedy Wednesday that left nine dead in Charleston, S.C.
"As a mother, grandmother and fellow human being, my heart is bursting for the victims, a wounded community and a wounded church," she said in a passionate 30-minute address to American mayors gathered here.
"It makes no sense that bipartisan legislation fails in Congress despite overwhelming public support," Clinton said. "The politics on this position have been poisoned. I will not be afraid to fight for common-sense reforms
because of this senseless gun violence."
"How is it possible that we as a nation allow guns to fall into the hands of people whose hearts are filled with hate?" she said, voice rising. "We can have common-sense gun reforms that keep them out of the hands of criminals and the mentally unstable while not penalizing responsible gun owners," Clinton said to sustained applause. (Half of the audience of about 1,000 stood.)

(22,308 posts)Maybe in the Sander's administration she can have a position which helps move these types of issues through Congress.
She can have this one issue, that we have not seen movement on in our direction for decades. It is all hers.

(486 posts)Whenever there's some disaster, people come out and say 'this needs to be done' and 'that needs to be done' but nothing is ever done. Are you just going to get more words and no action?
Look at what Australia did after the Port Arthur Massacre.

(2,003 posts)...As so much of the necessary data is unavailable, it is impossible to conclude that the "buyback" achieved anything other than the collection of 640,381 firearms (mostly .22 cal rimfire semi-auto rifles and pump-action shotguns) at a huge and unwarranted cost.
ABS firearm import statistics for 1996-97 indicate that 125,594 of these firearms have been replaced already.
In the final analysis, the success or otherwise of the confiscations can only be measured by crime reduction...

People often tout Australia's gun buyback as a success while conveniently ignoring that compliance was dismal.

(18,124 posts)strong regulation on gun ownership at a national level. Yet, as is now, it will probably ONLY really be enforced against the minority community which, granted does have a gun problem, no doubt, but no worse than the privileged society. Guns, cannot, like racism, be controlled or eradicated from this sick society. I believe. If Ms. Clinton wins, I just hope she will do what she knows she has to do, address the problems of this country head on, without fear.
Now if we don't get her some help in Congress, wiping out the tea party and racists by getting them voted out, NOTHING, will happen. They will obstruct her, just like they did our current POTUS. On her inauguration night, they will be meeting behind closed doors on how to totally create deadlock on all issues that affect all decent americans, especially minorities and women. Period. I not going to be fooled again by a racist, fearful of losing control, misogynistic white male dominated culture in D.C.
I hold no illusions about who the real enemy to america is.

(60 posts)but Im new here and am unfamiliar with your previous posts. Whom do you see as the real enemy to America? There's not enough in your post above for me to discern what you have in mind.
Thank you.

(18,124 posts)is a just, equal race blind society. Ha! Just the dream of a foolish idealist who's ideals died many years ago. There's plenty of posts here that you can discern what is needed to rid america of it's internal enemies. Getting corporate, billionaire and bankers money out of the political system is THE start. Then we can have fair and just elections. Stopping all this race based RW gerrymandering is part of the solution. People have to step up and be counted. Stopping the racist from taking the vote from hundreds of thousands of americans based on race using the meme of "voter fraud". Voter fraud has been, until the recent RW voter fraud, very rare in this country, even with the 2000 RW PNAC theft of our Presidency and political system. Stopping vote theft by the RW is another solution. Something again I feel our Justice Department is lax on or too impotent because of RW political pressure to do any thing about it.
Voting the racist tea PARTY and Republicans(samethingreally)back into the swamps and rotted woodwork from whence they came. Would be difficult given that the number of racist in america is a huge voting bloc from them. Getting our allegedly liberal and progressive politicians to start addressing hate groups with a simple, sorry for the movie cliche, "we're not going to take it anymore" because my constituency IS getting mad as hell. Standing up to the RW congressional obstructionist thast are legislatively obstructing our view of the truth about RW hate in america. Addressing the size of those groups, their hateful virulence in wanting to rid america of it's minorities. They are not just "fringe groups' anymore. The SPLC will give you all the information you need there. Our Justice Department has to stop this tiptoeing around the white terrorism in this country against minorities. The FBI head said the other day, the Charleston killing were not a terrorist incident which is a perfect example of RW pressure on this administration and the Justice Department.
Our hitler is out there, waiting to come forward with jobs, a fair wage, a booming economy and a virulently racist, fascist political agenda for the american people. WE have to be aware enough to nip that person's agenda in the bud. Our general political apathy coupled with worry about money, homes, jobs, children, and the host of other demands now grinding on the american individual and family makes it a real danger that we won't recognize this person until it's too late. I'm not concerned too much about most of the passengers on the RW "clown bus" this political season, but awareness is going to be a key and demanding justice and fairness in the economy, politics and race, by huge numbers of decent americans just trying to get through each day, is another solution in answering the enemy within. Our real enemy is us I think.
I could expand on this, but no. Our enemy is our general apathy and the huge voting bloc of racists just waiting for their chance to stomp the liberal and progressives into the dust. A war has started, not the "race war" those dangerous clowns want, but a war for the minds and soul of decent americans. I just hope as I hobble to the line drawn in the sand, that others will be there in huge numbers to stand against the fascist hate machine barreling down on us.

(3,498 posts)IS there any issue that could
MOTIVATE republicans more
than more gun regulation?
Hillary has yet to define
"hard truths" but is ready
to PLEA, strongly, for MORE
gun control...
because there's not enough yet?
These WEDGE ISSUES have
never won an election...
in fact an argument can be made
that WEDGE ISSUES are hurting
Democrats among particular demographics.
More feel good, yet empty rhetoric

(28,264 posts)We need to work toward mobilizing and attracting the majority of voters who have shown time and again that they favor common sense restraints on gun ownership.

The hard truth is
we live in a culture of fear
paranoia, corruption, violence
and greed.
Legislate those hard truths,
it would do more good

(10,495 posts)restrictions on guns, I agree it is an opportune deflection. Bernie has Progressive stands up and down the whole range of issues, Hillary has to pick and choose ones where he benefactors don't mind. This is the key difference! Bernie takes principled stands on the issues, and Hillary takes strategic stands on issues, the sincerity of which are suspect. Obama was going to reign in Wall Street, "...keep his foot on BP's neck until the Gulf disaster is cleaned up...", etc. we know how that turned out. Hillary is supported by those same Donors, forgive me if I have trouble believing her!
leftofcool
(19,460 posts)Can we assume when she wins the primary that you will be voting for the other side since you don't like her strategic stands?
Dustlawyer
(10,495 posts)I will be voting for the most Progressive candidate, if that is Hillary in the General election, yes I will vote for her. I am not in to cutting my nose off to spite my face.
Would you vote for Bernie if he defeats Hillary in the Primary?
Hillary is personal friends with all of the power brokers in the world. She is getting huge sums of money personally and to her campaign. I am not comfortable with that if I have an option of someone who is not beholden to huge, wealthy, powerful Donors. I don't know how anyone could be, but I respect their right to be that way.
If 87% of democrats think she is correct on the issues (very general statement, what poll was this?) then us Bernie supporters have our work cut out for us to point out the differences in policy (to the extent she provides her stands on all of the issues Bernie has already laid out).
I think the TPP issue is very telling as she has a conflict of interest and remains mute on the issue. On the one hand, the Donors by and large, support TPP and stand to benefit greatly, on the other hand the Agreement will screw most Americans, many of whom support her or come from her Party. She loses support from one side or the other by taking a stand on the issue. I believe that if she was in office she would be supporting the TPP based on past comments, besides, that's what all that money was for, to do what THEY WANT!

(16,038 posts)"Common sense gun control" is a vague, politically worn out meme...it is not well received by 2nd Amendment types on the left, right, or middle...It is time to remove it from the political landscape of the left...it may be to be key in winning or losing 2016..
