But the last thing we wanted was to cloud the discussion of the topic.
The original decision to air this segment was made before Wednesday's massacre. However, the staff and I had an internal debate about whether to show it at all this week. When we discussed putting it off, that conversation centered around race and perception - not the conversation we wanted the segment to invoke.
We decided against delaying the segment because we wanted to show multiple sides of what gun violence does in this country. We thought the issue of gun violence in our culture and society was an important conversation to continue -- too important to put off for another week. The consequences of gun violence should not be hidden.
As I say to all audiences, Meet the Press should make all viewers uncomfortable at some point or we are not doing our job. I hope folks view the gun video as a part of the conversation we should all be having and not the totality of it.

(24,703 posts)was met with a bunch of protesters with signs asking Toodles what he thinks of Al Roker.
Since he like to equate that people of color are the only ones that know how to use a gun.
He probably forgot about the bunch out in Nevada with the criminal Cliven Bundy and two of the individuals in that crowd going into a pizza shop killing two police officers, while eating a pizza and then draping a Gadsden flag over their dead bodies------------last time I checked they were white, and I think, if memory serves me correctly the kid that murdered 26 human beings in a school was white also , the list goes on and on--------------but for Toodles-----------that's a different question
I can believe it---------------if you listen to him speak, he is just a walking talking point with and for the right wing.
He really does not have the morals or the scruples to sit in the chair for MTP------------because now he represents the press
marym625
(17,997 posts)Not that all of what you said isn't.
I doubt any real journalist would say he doesn't represent them. If they gave him any thought at all.
I'm really tired of the right wing, corporate bought, excuse for news. You would think that the even the right wing followers would be sick of it as well. But I guess truth really doesn't matter anymore
turbinetree
(24,703 posts)there job description is to present facts------------I agree.
But the Toodles of the world and the Luke Russert's and others in this corporations, which there are many, are nothing but talking points and they have no business being there-------they are lackey's------------they get a paycheck. And these two for an example are perceived that they know what they are doing.
I found it outrageous that he only had "blacks" , why would you do something like that-------------I mean really-------------what was the logic-------------that the blacks turned the life around----------great---------------what about other nationalities----------then the information would have been credible with what the gun can do.
My answer is, because of the executive producer of the show and the other producers guiding the story every week, this is why I do not watch Matthews.
They all have to sit in a daily / weekly meeting and concur on this issue and the format and what can be a ratings-----------they are failing--------------they look at the gotcha moment.
They look at it has some play that has to be rehearsed and they actually believe in the play.
The best way I can represent my thoughts is that Bradley Cooper is doing a play about the Elephant Man (Joseph Merrick) in New York.
Everyone in the audience sees how Cooper slowly changes to appear in the deformation, but not represent how the skin changed--------they the (audience) have to imagine what they saw in the pictures that Cooper is now Merrick, from the past, the imagination as what was being said and shown to them today, they place that imagination in there mind-------------Toodles and his gang have done this from the get go, Fix Noise does this everyday-------------that is not journalism----------to create a imagination

(50,365 posts)Let's see, MTP (Todd) decides to address the issue of gun control after the massacre of 9 black parishioners by a white racist by showing a bigoted video of black men convicted of murder with nary a white murderer to be found in the nauseating clip.
A video that had NOTHING to do with gun control, not a damn thing.
A video that was blatantly racist in it's composition and it's message.
Deciding to use this disgusting clip as part of the discussion surrounding the massacre of 9 black parishioners says it all, imo.
It is despicable.
Spazito
(50,365 posts)From Todd's miserable excuse for using the clip:
"All of the men in the piece volunteered to be a part of the video and the larger project it is a part of."
What that says is the only men convicted of murder who were genuinely remorseful for their actions and willing to say so publicly were black men. There were NO white men showing remorse at all. Instead of making the point about that, he chose to show the clip to leave the racist contention it is black men with guns that's the problem.
I am genuinely nauseated by this blatant racism being seen as acceptable by those who decided to show this.
marym625
(17,997 posts)It's despicable. Absolutely despicable
tishaLA
(14,176 posts)to teach the evils of gun violence. That's right: the NYPD has a video that consists exclusively of African American killers they use to lecture kids. And the NYPD wants us to believe there's not a race problem with their policing practices.
Spazito
(50,365 posts)I am very glad you are bringing this up as well. There was so much that was despicable both in the video and the segment surrounding it with the exception of Eugene Robinson's comments which were stellar yet pointedly ignored by the rest of the panel.
Using that despicable video in New York schools, imo, does nothing but inculcate racist views into the students to whom it will be shown.
I really want to know what the project this odious video is part of and what it's intended purpose is. As it stands, it is the promotion of racist views, the same views the racist terrorist had resulting in the massacre of 9 beautiful, peaceful people.
ZX86
(1,428 posts)There's a big difference between broadcasting uncomfortable news and broadcasting racist propaganda. Months and months of the top news stories are unarmed Black people being assaulted and/or murdered by White people. Cop killings largely by White people. Mass murders again, largely by White people. And after all that, just days after a brutal racially motivated mass killing of unarmed Black people in a church you broadcast this biased trash?

(129,096 posts)I took diversity workshops years and years ago where they described what is known as a "scotoma" (blind spot). The problem with people like him and millions of others, is that they have that "scotoma" to how what they are saying is missing deeper context. I suppose the term "tone deaf" is trying to establish similar behavior.
As part of those workshops, they always used to use the old psychologist optical illustrations - e.g., what do you see in this picture?
When the alternate view from what they claim they see is pointed out, then a light bulb will hopefully go off. And what people are often trying to do with the protests and activism is to show folks that "alternate view", and if they are unreceptive to it being pointed out, then they show their true colors.

If he hadn't, I'm sure the WSJ reporter--the one who said President Obama isn't seen as a neutral voice on issues of race--would have set things straight /sarc
So on MTP today, I learned that only white people can be neutral on race and that being color blind means showing black killers exclusively.
calimary
(81,318 posts)would change the course of that newsroom on it.
Ever considered writing a letter on paper and sending it via snail-mail? Old-fashioned, yes. But it carries weight.
What WILL be the takeaway is that somebody out there in TV-Viewer-Land actually took the extra time and trouble to write a letter and mail it. Emphasis on the vehemence of the sentiment in the letter that in this iPhone/text/tweet day and age somebody actually went to extra trouble to write a letter and mail it in. The other takeaway is: if ONE person wrote this sentiment, that represents a larger universe of others who feel the same way but can't write in or don't bother or don't think of it or don't think it'll do any good.*
* Can I tell you again/bore you with the story of my own experience with this, in local radio, back when I was still working? I was the morning news gal for a succession of morning jocks on several radio stations. One of the many that had request-line operators (gee, why would stations have had THAT - and some still do? Other than to do their own basic product-testing, and gauge listener interest in whatever songs were being played, and how many people wanted to hear that same song again?).
ANYWAY - the then-bible of the ratings services, Arbitron, issued a separate ratings service called the "ARB Talkback." This wasn't just a ratings tabulation where you wrote down or otherwise reported what station you were listening to or when you were listening to that station. This allowed you to write in an actual comment. In this one particular issue of the "ARB Talkback," somebody out there actually wrote in "entertaining morning news with -calimary- mentioning me BY NAME. MAN what a day that was. I didn't even appreciate it fully til much later. But there was this buzz that slowly made its way through the whole building - about how their humble and easily-ignored morning news chick (ignored because the news person was there because he or she HAD to be there, but wasn't nearly as important as the famous, hugely-paid, and marquee-named Morning Jock) GOT SINGLED OUT POSITIVELY IN THE ALMIGHTY GODDAM ARB TALKBACK!
People looked at me differently. Smiled at me more. Spoke to me almost in deferential tones. Moved aside in the hallway so I could pass. So help me, THAT SINGLE MENTION in the ARB Talkback SAVED MY JOB for almost a year. Because that was the time when news and public affairs was being severely cut back by new programming people who wanted only to "play the hits". "Shut up and play the hits." Hell, even the jocks - even the MORNING jock with all his famous bits and signature comedy routines - those were the days when even HE was told to "shut up and play the hits." But I became the best kind of untouchable. They didn't dare fuck with me. At least for awhile. It saved my job til I could find a new one and get the hell outta there walking under my own power and at the time of MY choosing instead of involuntarily being carried out feet first.
CC it to any number of other network news executives and/or supervisors and/or department heads. So the recipient sees for him/herself that other people at his/her level or higher have seen this letter too.**
** I read during the Iraq War protests there was a woman who did not like the way the NYTimes reported something that blindly took bush/cheney crap at face value when it was certifiably not true. She wrote a letter to the NYTimes demanding a retraction or a correction. She cc'd it all over the place - AND ALSO --- to the NYTimes closest competitor, the Washington Post. So the NYTimes therefore KNEW it was being dressed down in front of its closest competitor, so that competitor would know how they botched a story too. She got a retraction straight away. This one didn't get buried. She publicly humiliated the NYTimes for faulty journalism in front of its fiercest competitor. Which probably gave the Post people a good chuckle and a couple of extra nyah-nyah-nyah's.
And it then somehow gets copied, faxed around, posted on the bulletin board in the coffee room or other places where employees see posted messages and management directives and stuff.
Even ONE of these represents X amount more people who are believed to feel the same way but - - -
1) don't feel like writing in - it's just not them;
2) too busy to take the time or go to the trouble;
3) wanted to write in but all of a sudden the phone rang or the kids started fighting in the other room or something else came up;
4) wanted to write in but by the time they got home or near a pen and paper, they forgot all about it;
5) didn't bother because they figured it wouldn't do any good.
And the ratio of that one letter to the number of non-reportings who feel the same way can get VERY large, depending on what basic universe they're working with. One letter out of a viewership/listenership in a small town? One letter out of that same kind of audience pool in a large city? One letter out of that same kind of audience pool regionally? Or even nationwide? Hell, on the internet now, one message can carry huge mounts of weight. World Wide Web dontchaknow.
So communication of your opinions to monoliths like these IS IMPORTANT. CRITICALLY important!!!! And if a bunch of those letters come in, or if they start getting barraged by phone calls or texts or emails - sooner or later they have to take notice of it. You don't ALWAYS shout into a vacuum. You could be a section leader in a VERY large glee club and not even know it.
I've seen this. I've experienced it personally. I've lived it. And stayed employed by it, too.

(50,278 posts)Sometimes, though, when inspired to write a snail mail letter it's difficult to find an address to get to a specific person. I haven't checked for NBC. The last snail mail complaint I wrote was to the ebay CEO complaining about the racist Obama paraphernalia offered on the site. I never heard anything and the last time I looked the items were still being sold on the site, so I guess that attempt went into the shredder. Maybe I should try again with a "cc" to the NAACP and some newspapers.

(4,246 posts)I was polite, specific, and asked for an apology. I let them know that Todd was better off to say nothing at all than to show the insensitive " not) color-blind" segment. I also suggested that MTP discussion should take place about the websites (popular in South Carolina) that influenced Roof, and about the flying of the confederate flag at the Capitol.

(10,650 posts)Even in other circumstances anyone involved would have known it was racist to show only black offenders. Given the racist murders in SC, it is impossible not to know it.
Todd is disgusting and his excuse is pathetic.

(4,246 posts)Chuck Todd what you did was racist, which makes you a racist. You made me feel uncomfortable because of your racist, in-your-face "news" segment.
Chuck - If you walk like a duck (racist) and quack like a duck (racist) - I'd say you're a duck (racist).

(20,166 posts)I believe most people have the potential for a soul or a conscience, but if they don't cultivate it, it grows weak and withers away.
Some, like Todd, however, eagerly sell off to the highest bidder what little, anemic potential for a conscience they may have once had.
marym625
(17,997 posts)Do they actually sell the coverage?
I know they do in a round about way, but I still picture them sitting there saying to whatever entity wants the story (NRA/KKK in this case) saying, "because of that little incident in Charleston, this is going to cost you another $50k.

Pointing out forcefully that the Charleston shooter is white and that the two killers that escaped and are on the loose in New York are both white. Perhaps still reeling from that, Todd also was pathetic in the segment where he interviewed Mike Huckabee.

(17,997 posts)And NBC to the OP. A little late but hopefully some people will see it.
I don't think it was because he was reeling. I think he's just pathetic.
