The drone will deliver medication to reproductive health groups, who will distribute the pills to people who want to terminate their pregnancies and cant access abortion legally. Abortion is heavily restricted in Poland, and the drone project is a collaboration between Women on Waves and a few other reproductive health and womens activist groups.
Women on Waves doesnt need authorization from Germany or Poland to fly the abortion drone because its under five pounds, wont be used commercially, and the pilot will be able to see it during the short border flight. Even though its illegal to take the pills in Poland, its not illegal to fly them in, providing a crucial loophole for helping people receive access to safe medicine.
Its a gimmick, but a worthwhile one. Part of the mission is raising awareness about Polands prohibitive reproductive health laws, but its also physically delivering medication to people who dont have access.

If I ever happened upon wealth enough to sustain a modest life, I would dedicate it to these organizations.

It's perfectly legal to have abortions in the US but poor woman can't get to the service providers.

(27,985 posts)In addition to clinics being literally hundreds of miles away from millions of women, they are often burdened with additional costs for unnecessary medical procedures like ultrasounds and mandatory "counseling" which, in addition to being forced to receive false information, requires 24 hour waiting periods resulting in multiple visits and MORE additional costs.
Abortion in the US *IS* under attack and *WILL* be gone to all but those with significant means if a Republican is elected in 2016 and names SCOTUS judges. Not maybe, not in jeapordy, it will be gone.
