Rex Complex fires balloon

The Rex Complex fire near the town of Anderson on the George Parks Highway delivered both good news and bad news today.

No homes burned on Monday, but the fire grew dramatically, turned south and put additional structures at risk. The fire has already destroyed six homes and two secondary structures,

The complex consists of two fires: The 14,300-acre Kobe Fire, which was only 5,000 acres on Monday, and the 4,100-acre Fish Creek Fire, which quadrupled in size over 24 hours.

Visibility in Fairbanks is terrible. I was unable to copy pictures, but they're at the link.

about 350 miles from here. I have a lot of friends up there, though, and we've camped out there on the Chena Hot Springs Rd.

Our air quality down here has been pretty bad because of the other large fires up by Willow and the one south of here in Sterling, but those fires are at least somewhat contained now. Fires have been going on around the state for a couple weeks. We need rain bad.

while you are not close, a few things.

Car filters will have to be changed, so will home filters, once this is over. You will be amazed how much crap they catch.

If you know anybody with asthma, we use a bandana when we cover fires. Ours has activated charcoal, specialized, but a wet one will help to filter the particles, at least gross particles. It does help.

Even as far as you are this can become an issue with right wind conditions.

There is one bright side, sunset photos become spectacular. Drift smoke can be amazing.

On the really down side, getting help from the mainland will only be air attack. I would not be too shocked to see part of the DC 10 fleet fly north. It's not like fire companies can drive overland.

Thanks for keeping us up to date...it matters. How many people are getting displaced? I have not seen the FEMA activation go through the DHS mailer, which surprises me. Or I missed it, possible. Will look for it in the morning.
