from the comment-section:

"1. Taylor Swift lashes out at Spotify’s free tier for paying shit to artists (which is true, as others have said: see Thom Yorke). Apple also did not want to offer a free tier. Cahoots.
2. Apple announces music streaming service, paying a higher cut to artists and labels without a free tier, but with 3 months of ad-free service for free (kind of a big deal!).
3. Taylor Swift is one of the, if not the, biggest selling artists in the world. Which means she has the most fans. Potentially huge number of subscribers for Apple music. In fact, more people bought her last album in the first few weeks than Spotify has premium users.
4. Taylor Swift writes “open letter” basically praising Apple (now her super fans think Apple is awesome and cool) and one day later the largest company on the planet changes course. I don’t remember Apple ever moving that quickly.
5. Apple Music is all over the news, and not just tech news. News that her fans will read, fans that may not read tech blogs or even real news sites. People that don’t even know what WWDC is.

Considering that Taylor Swift has her own label, it would be pretty surprising that Apple hadn’t spoken to her a long time ago, or that she only found out about the free trial arrangement last week.

I call PR stunt.

PS: Lars Ulrich said that Apple is the coolest company on the planet. More PR.
