Hillary Clinton, At Black Church Near Ferguson, Says 'All Lives Matter'

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/06/23/hillary-clinton-ferguson_n_7638920.html

Hillary Clinton on Tuesday told a crowd at a black church near where the police killing of an unarmed teen propelled the "Black Lives Matter" movement that "all lives matter."

During a campaign stop minutes from where a white police officer fatally shot black teenager Michael Brown last summer, Clinton told a mostly African-American crowd at Christ the King United Church of Christ that “America’s struggles with race are far from finished.”...

"All lives matter," Clinton said.

The phrase garnered most of Twitter’s attention about her speech, much of it negative.

Ouch. Horrible optics.

Judith Butler, a professor at University of California, Berkley, summed up the frustration with the use of “all lives matter” in The Times in January.

“When some people rejoin with ‘All Lives Matter’ they misunderstand the problem, but not because their message is untrue,” she wrote. “It is true that all lives matter, but it is equally true that not all lives are understood to matter which is precisely why it is most important to name the lives that have not mattered, and are struggling to matter in the way they deserve.”

Where Secretary Clinton, who is a horrible, horrible campaigner, will put her foot in her mouth again and again.

There's a reason her campaign is limiting her extemporaneous speaking engagements. She has this habit of just . . . saying things.

I have no illusions and believe she will be our nominee. But the thought of her in the general election is genuinely terrifying. The Supreme Court is too important. She has been around too long for this kind of amateur hour.

There's no excuse at all.

She was talking about how a disproportionate number of young people of color are out of school and out of work and, explaining that everyone needs a “chance and a champion,” she recalled how her mother was abandoned as a teenager and went on to work as a maid.

“What kept you going?” Mrs. Clinton remembered asking her mother. “Her answer was very simple. Kindness along the way from someone who believed she mattered. All lives matter.”

Clinton also addressed the recent protests that have raged across the country, and drew links between violence at home and abroad.

She declared, "yes, black lives matter," a mantra of demonstrators around the country who have been protesting recent grand jury decisions not to indict white police officers involved in the deaths of unarmed black men in Ferguson, Missouri, and in New York.

She wondered what Kennedy would say about "the thousands of Americans marching in our streets demanding justice for all," and "the mothers who've lost their sons."

“The truth is equality, opportunity, civil rights in America are still far from where they need to be. Our schools are still segregated. In fact more segregated than they were in the 1960s. Nearly 6 million young Americans between the ages of 16 and 24 are out of school and out of work. Think of that. Neither learning nor working. And the numbers are particularly high for young people of color. Statistics like these are rebukes to the real progress we have made. And they pose an urgent call for us to act publicly, politically, and personally.

We should start by giving all of our children the tools and opportunities to overcome legacies of discrimination to live up to their own God-given potentials. I just saw some of the young people attending camp here at church down in the basement. And I was thrilled to see that because that is the kind of commitment we need more of, in every church, in every place, until every child is reached. And I hope we can take that as a cause for action.

I learned this not from politics but from my mother who taught me that everybody, everybody needs a chance and a champion. She knew what it was like to have neither one. Her own parents abandoned her. By 14, she was out on her own working as a house maid. Years later when I was old enough to understand, I asked her. What kept you going? Her answer was very simple. Kindness along the way from someone who believed she mattered. All lives matter.”

Also, would I be correct in thinking most people who are assuming the worst about what she said were not, um, favorably disposed towards her to begin with?
