http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/06/23/hillary-clinton-ferguson_n_7638920.htmlDuring a campaign stop minutes from where a white police officer fatally shot black teenager Michael Brown last summer, Clinton told a mostly African-American crowd at Christ the King United Church of Christ that Americas struggles with race are far from finished....
"All lives matter," Clinton said.
The phrase garnered most of Twitters attention about her speech, much of it negative.
Ouch. Horrible optics.

(9,086 posts)When some people rejoin with All Lives Matter they misunderstand the problem, but not because their message is untrue, she wrote. It is true that all lives matter, but it is equally true that not all lives are understood to matter which is precisely why it is most important to name the lives that have not mattered, and are struggling to matter in the way they deserve.

(13,390 posts)Yet another misstep. Hillary Clinton is not a political novice. Yet, she has made some truly ridiculous errors. "Dead broke," being politically negligent when it came to emails, etc. I am mystified.

There's a reason her campaign is limiting her extemporaneous speaking engagements. She has this habit of just . . . saying things.
I have no illusions and believe she will be our nominee. But the thought of her in the general election is genuinely terrifying. The Supreme Court is too important. She has been around too long for this kind of amateur hour.
There's no excuse at all.
And she said this to a black church.

She is trying to run a passive, name-recognition, big money only primary and may get away with it. It won't fly in the general and then we'll be stuck.
I really hope Bernie goes harder after her soon. He needs to go on the offense and force her to engage.

Btw - #AllLivesMatter is yet another white supremacist Southern Strategy dog whistle. and IMHO people should stop believing these are innocent slips of an old lady. These are the savvy slips of someone who believes she is a master triangulator and that her actual "base" is a bunch of racist throwbacks that she wants to woo into her "purple space".

(99,710 posts)She declared, "yes, black lives matter," a mantra of demonstrators around the country who have been protesting recent grand jury decisions not to indict white police officers involved in the deaths of unarmed black men in Ferguson, Missouri, and in New York.
She wondered what Kennedy would say about "the thousands of Americans marching in our streets demanding justice for all," and "the mothers who've lost their sons."

(49,212 posts)We're back to her 2008 effort to mimic the traits stereotypical of white blue collar guys in the hope of winning their votes. Casual racism, maybe shots again, what's next a "lifelong" love of hunting or an early primary state NFL franchise? Maybe a Harley or a photo op where she's working a really expensive grill.
She's just not good at dog whistles and pandering, and she keeps trying without serming to notice that she's so bad at it she winds up insulting all sides.
Fuck it, she should just get a Camaro.

(2,522 posts)The truth is equality, opportunity, civil rights in America are still far from where they need to be. Our schools are still segregated. In fact more segregated than they were in the 1960s. Nearly 6 million young Americans between the ages of 16 and 24 are out of school and out of work. Think of that. Neither learning nor working. And the numbers are particularly high for young people of color. Statistics like these are rebukes to the real progress we have made. And they pose an urgent call for us to act publicly, politically, and personally.
We should start by giving all of our children the tools and opportunities to overcome legacies of discrimination to live up to their own God-given potentials. I just saw some of the young people attending camp here at church down in the basement. And I was thrilled to see that because that is the kind of commitment we need more of, in every church, in every place, until every child is reached. And I hope we can take that as a cause for action.
I learned this not from politics but from my mother who taught me that everybody, everybody needs a chance and a champion. She knew what it was like to have neither one. Her own parents abandoned her. By 14, she was out on her own working as a house maid. Years later when I was old enough to understand, I asked her. What kept you going? Her answer was very simple. Kindness along the way from someone who believed she mattered. All lives matter.
Also, would I be correct in thinking most people who are assuming the worst about what she said were not, um, favorably disposed towards her to begin with?

(34,825 posts)but I'm having a hard time understanding how this turn of phrase passed QA before they green lighted her speech. Surely, someone on that crack team of advisers would know what a loaded term that is. There was nobody in that room that suggested maybe tweaking that a bit to read Everybody's life matters? Poor optics, indeed.
