If the tragic terrorist attack in Charleston, South Carolina, has been weighing as heavily on your heart as it has on ours, please take some time today to watch the extraordinary eulogy President Obama gave for Rev. Clementa Pinckney on Friday. It just might be the most powerful speech of his presidency.

Watch President Obama's eulogy in Charleston now:

President Obama's beautiful eulogy not only honored Rev. Pinckney and the eight other people whose lives were so horrifically cut short in that act of violence -- it also acknowledged the fraught and painful racial history that has brought us to this place. In a striking moment from his speech, the president made a strong case for why now is the time for us to remove the Confederate flag from our public spaces:

“It’s true a flag did not cause these murders,” Obama added. “But as people from all walks of life now acknowledge… the flag has always represented more than just ancestral pride. For many, black and white, that flag was a reminder of systemic oppression and racial subjugation. We see that now. Removing the flag from this state’s capitol would not be an act of political correctness. It would not be an insult to the valor of Confederate soldiers. It would simply be an acknowledgment that the cause for which they fought—the cause of slavery -- was wrong.”

While President Obama's eulogy is a meditation on the nature of grace, it is also a stirring and remarkable call to action. I'm confident you will be as moved by his eloquence as we were.

Thanks for being a part of DFA at this extraordinary moment in history.
