All jokes aside, the Republican Party is officially afraid of Donald Trump.
He has virtually zero chance of winning the presidential nomination. But insiders worry that the loud-mouthed mogul is more than just a minor comedic nuisance on cable news; they fret that hes a loose cannon whose rants about Mexicans and scorched-earth attacks on his rivals will damage the eventual nominee and hurt a party struggling to connect with women and minorities and desperate to win.
Donald Trump is like watching a roadside accident, said former George W. Bush press secretary Ari Fleischer. Everybody pulls over to see the mess. And Trump thinks thats entertainment. But running for president is serious. And the risk for the party is he tarnishes everybody.
Those risks were amplified this week after a trio of polls showed him likely to earn a coveted invitation to the partys debates, which ironically were restructured with the very goal of avoiding the circus-like atmosphere of 2012. Giving Trump a major platform just as the country is tuning in is not exactly the Big Tent the partys bigwigs had in mind..

I am one of the few observers that takes Trump seriously. I see the GOP is starting to realize it. I take him seriously enough where he being the actual well candidate and having a chance to win the whole enchilada is a real, very scary, possibility.
Perhaps it has to do with talking to many folks who are actually enthused by him. And at this point his rise in the actual polls in primary states is very, very, real.

(154,021 posts)I would not blame the partisans fully. They are acting on a lot of signals from different places.
But I look at this now with almost detached academic interest.

...is a reflection of what he and his pals have turned their party into. Trumps not tarnishing the party, he's stepping up to an already-tarnished object, thanking you for drawing such a fine crowd, and making a pitch for Doctor Donald's Patented Gold-Plated Elixer And Trump-tastic Tarnish Remover (for the low, low price of only $9.99 a bottle, with one Mexican kicked back south of the border with every purchase, guaranteed!)!
Shorter Ari: "That bastard! He's fleecing our pigeons!"

(16,254 posts)Granted, they don't have his hair...NO ONE has his hair...but under the surface, many or most of those candidates have some serious issues that should shame the Republican base.
Right now, Trump has the attention because of his clowning around, but there isn't one single candidate that should garner more than 10% of the vote, if chosen. That includes Jeb. The Jeb you see is not the real Jeb. Betcha a dime to a donut I'm right.
