Tyne Daly Shares Her Unique Link to SCOTUS Marriage Ruling in Emotional Curtain Speech

Actress Tyne Daly has a unique connection to Friday’s historic U.S. Supreme Court marriage equality ruling, and, in her first curtain speech since she closed Gypsy, shared it with the audience of It Shoulda Been You that evening.

“On the 26th of June, 1966 I got married. That’s 49 years ago. [To a man with] black hair and he had black skin, and our marriage was against the law in the United States of America in 17 states. The following year in a case wonderfully called Loving vs. Virginia, took down those miscegenation laws.”

Added Daly: “Hate is very strong, but love is stronger.”

since this is DU, I'd like to mention that when we look at Tyne and her great cast on that Broadway stage, we are looking at Union workers in a Union shop.

They were married 24 years - from 1966-1990. They have three daughters. Referring to him in the past tense in the reply title is inaccurate because he's still very much alive. She filed for divorce in 1990, citing irreconcilable differences.

one of the reasons that it has never been hard to reject any kind of discrimination.

Being afraid to travel because you might run into the haters. Being afraid to speak out because it would bring down the hate on you. Being afraid that your children would never be accepted.

Anyone who dared to enter an interracial marriage back then understands the discrimination the couples trying to have a same sex marriage feel now.

If we don't stop fighting hate, if we don't back down, we will win. We've got the love on our side!!
