New York prison escape: Richard Matt was shot three times in head, police say

New York state police have said Richard Matt, one of two escaped inmates who spent three weeks on the run in the upstate woods, was shot three times in the head on Friday.
On Sunday, state troopers with guns drawn were seen searching a cabin in Malone as officers from several state and federal agencies continued their search for David Sweat, the surviving murderer who escaped from the maximum-security Clinton Correctional Facility more than three weeks ago.
Matt was shot and killed by a member of a US Customs and Border Protection Tactical Unit on Friday. On Sunday, police released details of his autopsy. Officials said Matt had bug bites on his legs, blisters and minor abrasions that would be expected for someone who had been living in the woods. Toxicology results were pending.

A coroner who examined Matt’s body said he had been eating and drinking during his time on the run and was fittingly dressed for the outdoors. Franklin County coroner Brian Langdon said on Sunday that Matt was in good physical shape until his fatal confrontation with authorities. He said the results of toxicology reports were several weeks away.
Langdon said Matt’s body was clean and he may have even showered and shaved in the time since his escape.
