One of the shadowy figures who appears to have influenced alleged Charleston killer Dylann Roof is Harold Covington, the founder of a white separatist movement and, within supremacist circles, an influential sci-fi author. Covington, the latest in a long line of rightwing sci-fi writers, has been linked to racist crimes in the past and this week called the massacre “a preview of coming attractions”.

The racist manifesto and photos apparently posted by Roof makes mention of the Northwest Front, created by Covington, a former member of the American Nazi party who traveled to South Africa and Rhodesia in order to agitate for white power. In the accompanying photos, Roof wore patches with Rhodesian and apartheid-era South African flags on them.

Covington, if you believe his website, runs a growing enclave of white supremacists near Seattle called the Northwest Front. The non-profit group is reflected in a series of sci-fi novels, authored by Covington, about a dystopian future in which a white nation is the only answer to US economic and racial woes.

The reason you cannot conceive it is because you are confident of yourself. Self-confidence is the very thing that prevents irrational fear from taking over thoughts and behaviour.

Those who lack a critical amount of self-confident MAY fall into hating others, depending on the rest of their character.

On of the effects of the gay-bashing is that to this day, I have been lacking some self-confidence myself. And I sometimes feel fear turning into hatred inside me (including self-hatred). Addressing those fears requires some mental effort, but it always starts with ac knowledging that I'm falling into a destructive pattern of thought. The problem of a lot of those violent bigots out there is that their fears turn to hatred regularly, and they never see it as a problem, inanely supposing that violence and death will solve all.

your right that at times I do have a self confidence but I have to fight my own self to retain it.

I guess you can say I'm a battered female, years of it, both physical and mental, these days mostly mental but within the last couple of years I've been kicked down the stairs, had a gun. To my head, had knives thrown at me and called every conceivable name one uses to express rage and inspire fear...

I've learned but obviously not fully understood that it's not me, it's a lack of strength and honor the other possesses, granted there are times when it can bring me down pretty low but I guess the inner self worth I once possessed fully keeps my head above the fray..

Perhaps it's my lack of fear of death as well which allows me to at least stare down my oppressor even if I am forced to remain silent...

Picking my battles in life is important as I see it as well as knowing For a fact, others have it worse, that angers me more when others are attacked
