Jefferson Parish has issued the first marriage license to a gay couple. Clerk of Court Jon Gegenheimer announced Monday (June 29) that his office would begin providing the licenses after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled Friday that same sex-couples had the the right to marry.
The first license was issued after 10:30 a.m., according to a worker at the clerk's office.
Gegenheimer said the decision was made after his attorney reviewed the ruling over the weekend. "He's been studying the opinion for three days. I got a call from him that said to go ahead,'' Gegenheimer said. "I started issuing licenses effective 10:05 (a.m.).''
The announcement comes on the heels of an advisory by the Louisiana Clerks of Court Association to delay issuing the licenses for up to 25 days, the deadline in which to appeal the high court ruling. Gegenheimer said he chose to rely on the opinion of his attorney.
Justices of the Peace Vernon Wilty III in Gretna asaid they had not performed ceremonies for any same sex couples.
