The City of Omaha will offer health insurance benefits to all married same-sex spouses of city employees, the Mayor's Office announced Monday.

Following the U.S. Supreme Court decision legalizing gay marriage in all 50 states, Mayor Jean Stothert issued an executive order extending the benefits to same-sex spouses of eligible full-time employees.

The city already offered pension, flexible spending accounts, COBRA and Family Medical Leave Act benefits to those who were married in a state that had recognized same-sex marriage.

Now it will also offer additional insurance and pension benefits to married same-sex couples, Stothert's office said.
