Boston 2024s Bid 2.0, as the new version has been called, was unveiled during a presentation on Monday. It includes a number of proposed temporary Olympic structures that would then be converted into lasting parks and neighborhoods for Boston after the Games. The idea is to avoid the ugly, unused, dilapidated structures white elephants that other Olympic host cities have been left with.
Boston 2024 provided a series of sketches and images of the best-case scenario Boston after the Olympics. Heres what Boston would look before, during, and after the Olympic Games if Boston 2024s dreams are realized.

(39,343 posts)They got a stadium that they are ditching this year, and the grand Olympic village was little more than rebuilding a few dorms over at Georgia Tech. Other than that, it was a traffic nightmare and nowhere to live for freshman at GT for a semester or two.

(5,586 posts)It was shocking, but I haven't experienced traffic that light in this city since 1996.
GA Tech got one of the the best dorms and the best swimming facilities in the world at the time.
And the German beer gardens they set up were epic.

That was my comment too. They didn't show the miles and miles of traffic jams that this friggen monstrosity will cause. Oh wait, we already have them. That's right I forgot... We are the worst city in the country for drivers so let's have the Olympics. Don't worry our public transportation can handle it... oh wait, we're 6th worse on that too. To hell with it, let's just do it anyway.

(3,433 posts)What that picture is missing are the miles and miles of traffic jams that will occur if this happens. We have already been named the worst city in the US for Boston drivers. We're also 6 on the worst public transportation list. Boston 2024 will be a friggen nightmare if it happens.

Edit: I didn't see the "Note the traffic" in the OP. Great minds...

(59,587 posts)Oslo is dropping out of bidding for the 2022 Winter Olympics, leaving Almaty, Kazakhstan and Beijing as the only remaining cities seeking to host the event. Why? One reason is that people are starting to realize that spending mega-money to build sporting venues that may not ever be used again doesn't make economic sense. Another is that the International Olympic Committee is a notoriously ridiculous organization run by grifters and hereditary aristocrats. Norwegian citizens were particularly amused/outraged (amuseraged) by the IOC's diva-like demands for luxury treatment during the hypothetical Games. Here's a piece in the Norwegian media about the controversy, with translation provided by a generous Norwegian reader named Mats Silberg:
They demand to meet the king prior to the opening ceremony. Afterwards, there shall be a cocktail reception. Drinks shall be paid for by the Royal Palace or the local organizing committee.
Separate lanes should be created on all roads where IOC members will travel, which are not to be used by regular people or public transportation.
A welcome greeting from the local Olympic boss and the hotel manager should be presented in IOC members' rooms, along with fruit and cakes of the season. (Seasonal fruit in Oslo in February is a challenge ...)
The hotel bar at their hotel should extend its hours extra late and the minibars must stock Coke products.
The IOC president shall be welcomed ceremoniously on the runway when he arrives.
The IOC members should have separate entrances and exits to and from the airport.
During the opening and closing ceremonies a fully stocked bar shall be available. During competition days, wine and beer will do at the stadium lounge.
IOC members shall be greeted with a smile when arriving at their hotel.
Meeting rooms shall be kept at exactly 20 degrees Celsius at all times.
The hot food offered in the lounges at venues should be replaced at regular intervals, as IOC members might risk having to eat several meals at the same lounge during the Olympics.

(56,177 posts)Was a fiasco...I can't imagine the committee would overlook that big undertaking when they deny Boston's bid.

(50,560 posts)In case no one has noticed, BOSTON IS THICK WITH UNIVERSITIES! Come on, guys: Hold opening and closing ceremonies in Gillette Stadium (which is 20 miles out of town, but it's still beautiful and huge), have the events at the various universities in the Boston area, house the athletes in the dorms. Hotels for the spectators are going to be the biggest problem - there's already a shortage and no one's going to build a whole hotel that'll fill for two weeks in its entire life...and I really doubt the "throw up a shitload of tents" thing they do for the Hajj in the Middle East will work.

(19,348 posts)They do not need the Olympics to saddle the city with debt.
It is time to eliminate this highly corrupt event. If not, at least privatize the entire venture and keep the taxpayer safe.

(9,033 posts)pick up the entire tab. In fact, they should pay compensation to the cities and citizens.
Just another bunch of scam artists, although not as blatant as FIFA.
