Apple Released the iPhone Eight Years Ago Today

Eight years ago today, the smartphone market changed forever. On June 29, 2007, Apple released the original iPhone with a sleek form factor and revolutionary multi-touch screen and significantly disrupted an industry then dominated by companies such as Nokia, BlackBerry, Sony and Motorola.

The original iPhone was exclusive to AT&T in the United States before launching in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Portugal, Ireland and Austria in November 2007. The 8GB model initially cost $599 on a two-year contract until Apple dropped the price to $399 in September 2007, far more expensive than today's starting price of $199.

The eighth anniversary of the original iPhone's release takes place just one day before the worldwide debut of Apple Music, another launch that could prove historic as Apple attempts to enter the crowded streaming music market alongside Spotify, Pandora, Google Play Music, YouTube and other players. Fittingly, many people will try Apple Music for the first time using an iPhone.

Apple has since sold hundreds of millions of iPhones around the world and launched ten models in eight years, ranging from the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS to the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. In the second quarter, the iPhone accounted for nearly 70% of Apple's revenue alongside the iPad, Mac, iTunes and other products and services.

Seems a trend with phones that one takes the favor of consumers, then they get cocky and fail to move forward. I don't know if this will happen to Apple...do they have a larger size now? 2 years ago when moved to LTE I considered iPhone but opted for the Note because i use my phone for everything, I have large hands and old eyes...I've never regretted it...

These days it seems like the samsungs have larger screens than Apple and are very popular.

That was BlackBerry's rather pathetic answer to the iPhone. If I had known Android was coming along I would have waited.

Any stock chart you see from any mainstream source is already adjusted for stock splits.

I remember how Apple locked the iPhone down to AT&T, which is why I didn't get one when they first came out. AT&T coverage was a joke here in Iowa at the time and there was no way I was going to switch over to them just for iPhone service. It's improved a little bit over the past few years but still lags pretty far behind Verizon or US Cellular. I got an iPhone Touch which was an iPhone without the phone bits and it became very useful to me. I was so glad when Apple's exclusivity deal with AT&T ended and Verizon was allowed to start selling the phones. The moment I became eligible to upgrade I was in the local Best Buy purchasing an iPhone 4. In 2013 I traded it in on an iPhone 5, then this year I got a 6 Plus.

No i-* here.

It freaks me the fuck out to see someone driving with earbuds in, or doing the 'look up / look down / look up / look down' of typing / reading while driving.

Hell, at lunch in many dfw restaurants, nobody's talking to each other, everyone whips out a gadget to stare at.
