"SNIP.................

1. Bree Newsome is a staunch defender of voting rights.

.......

Newsome told Charlotte’s Levine Museum of the New South that the nationwide and statewide dismantling of voting rights legislation -- an effort that largely serves to disenfranchise black voters -- coupled with George Zimmerman’s acquittal in the death of Trayvon Martin “activated” her to “[move] from being a sideline supporter to an activist.”

2. She's also an accomplished musician…

........

According to her website, Newsome’s been playing piano and singing since, like, forever, with past stints in the Peabody Conservatory and the Baltimore Choral Arts Society. Listen to “#StayStrong” above, a song about being “young, black, and gifted/ Tryna stay lifted/ In a world that keeps [you] stinted/ Just ’cause [you’re] pigmented” that was inspired by her voting rights activism in North Carolina.

that no one was hurt or killed. I admire her courage, and I know that most of us appreciate the symbolic gesture, but imo she was very reckless and wrong. A lot of the "forget, hell" boys carry guns and have itchy trigger fingers. There was no way to know that none of them were lurking nearby, which endangered not only her life but those around her. It was also a spit-in-the-face gesture which is riling the same "forget, hell" crew, and possibly making it more difficult for some officials to act. The SC legislature was moving in the right direction, and I think we should have waited for that outcome. Such a result would have been more palatable than forcibly removing the flag.

We are very quick to blame FOX and hate radio for inciting unrest. I think we should consider some of our own actions in the same light.

with Fox and hate radio with regard to inciting violence. Not comparable at all.

the same as Fox or hate radio, but many actions can have the same or similar results. One of the biggest differences is that I believe many on the far right-wing side are deliberately trying to rile their base into action. But bad consequences are still bad even if unintentional. I would like to think that we are smart enough to understand that many far right-wingers react on emotions rather than logic or reason. Knowing that, I think it is irresponsible to spit in their eye, especially if there is another way to achieve the same goal. It gains us nothing to achieve a purely symbolic victory if we start a war in the process.

I'm at work so I can't access FB just now, but I saw a picture of her arrest and she was smiling from ear-to-ear. That has to be one of my favorite pics of the year!
