As more people become familiar with 3D printing and the ways additive manufacturing can change how things are made, new ideas and applications continue to emerge. While printing toys and cell phone cases can be fun, these are not world-changing applications. A team in Amsterdam, Netherlands MX3D, is preparing to change the world by printing it a new bridge.
I read about this in Time Magazine today.. and it got me thinking down a different road on the TPP. I will be the first to admit.. I have not read it all.. but many have been kind enough to share highlights in DU of the agreement..kind of explaining and definitely against it.
This whole push of 3-D printing is going to do away with manufacturing as we know it. If they can print a bridge and we can not print guns at home, what is the point of big plants in a very few years..
This world is about to turn on a dime, and jobs as we knew them are not going to exist anymore.
I do not know if TPP will be meaningful of anything in 10 years..
We will all be doing everything we need from our own homes..
A little scary when you think about it.
Will our society become even more fractured as we need each other less.
Just thinking

(43,049 posts)Manufacturing in the US is actually increasing-- it just takes a lot fewer people to run the machines doing the manufacturing.
Even Amazon is using robots for its warehouse picking, although that's a lousy paying suck job anyway.
There's a lot of quiet talk in some circles about a future with very few jobs. Some of might love it, being able to go back to school, read a lot, and take up sculpture. Some of us might just get bored and rob whatever cash source is out there.
Think of the pats of the Middle East and Africa with unemployment rates up to 80% and imagine what we would do if we had that here. Not pretty.

(22,877 posts)Its our nature to be involved in something work, religion, arts etc.. When you retire (as I have) the first thing you do is get involved with as much as you can, because otherwise a person would just shrivel up and die..
Everyone needs purpose that is for sure

(5,177 posts)you need a source of income. If everyone did for themselves, we'd have to revert to an agrarian society again to live.
