If you are against Gay marriage you are taking that position because you HATE Gays

If I had lots of money I would build a hardware store across the street from him and put him out of business

(115,735 posts)It would be amusing for someone to enter the store in the guise of a "stereotypical" gay person and see if he tries to throw them out. And if he does, ask him if he's sure they are gay and how he knows that. Or, have a very "masculine" seeming man, preferably a very large, burly one, go in and select all kinds of very manly (and expensive) tools - and mention at checkout that they are for his husband. Confuse the hell out of the owner. Mess up his preconceptions.
Of course, the best thing to do would be just to shop somewhere else. If I owned a competing hardware store in that town I'd put up a sign that says "Everyone Welcome."

(60,010 posts)The entire county has 22,000 people.
I am assuming that area is like other southern areas, where people know each other pretty well.
The owner of the store is a Baptist Minister, btw, so he definitely knows a lot of folks.
What he needs to pay attention to is the 4 listed sex offenders who live in the town.

(38,187 posts)even though that gay person has told them she wants nothing to do with them....like in my case. It is hell being gay in a small bigoted town.

(4,520 posts)Call the cops to have them arrested for trespassing? Stand their ground?? And if they mistakenly call out a straight person? Libel and/or slander. There are going to be a whole lot of lawsuits in the near future.

(50,278 posts)go the counter with a giant wad of cash in hand and just as they're about to ring it up say, "Oops! Didn't see the sign. I'm gay." and stuff the wad of cash in their pocket and walk out the door.
Jamastiene
(38,187 posts)That would make them rethink their nonsensical "policy."
Either do that or break out a credit card with a rainbow and gay pride stuff on it. Give them a second or two to think about the money they are turning away once they see the card. They'll think twice about such a stupid idea after that.

(45,319 posts)but rather some complex and understandable form of super holiness. DU promotes the world's leading anti gay activist as a great progressive man of science.
So while I agree with you that those who are against gay people getting married take that position because they hate gay people, most of DU thinks that being against the rights of specific minority groups is an option open to some religions. Not all of them, of course. Just the ones with lots of money and indictments for sex abuses.

(4,461 posts)... the Pope. I could be wrong. And I don't understand this idea that because a Dem can support one idea that comes from the Pope, it automatically signals support for "everything" the Pope says.
I'm not Catholic. I have no vested interest in the Pope or what he says. I've heard reports of him saying things not typical of a Pope (climate change, income inequality), and I think that's a good thing. That doesn't mean I don't think his position on marriage equality is deplorable. But what do I know? I'm just trying not to screw up my gum chewing while I'm walking here.
randys1
(16,286 posts)he is really quite different, but yes, of course he is still dumb as a rock and full of hate when it comes to Gays.
If a Gay person tells me the pope is an ass for that reason, then he is an ass.
Whiskeytide
(4,461 posts)... If ANYONE says he's an ass for his positions concerning LGBT issues, I will agree he's an ass. But if they then say "how 'bout his announcements on climate change", I'll say I agree with him there, and I'm glad he said what he said. I don't see what the problem is. There are a lot of people - public figures and private friends - with whom I agree on some issues and disagree on others. Agreeing on issue A doesn't mean I'm going to give them a pass on issue B.

(9,033 posts)and great progressive man of science, and where are the links to people on DU who insist that being against marriage equality is some complex and understandable form of super holiness?

(9,033 posts)And certainly there is a case to be made in reference to the first part of my question. What about the second and in my view, much more important, part? (I expect the Pope to be Catholic)
bravenak
(34,648 posts)I've never really understood that. I don't do the linking to other people posts very often so I'll pass on the link thingy. Protip: There is this awesome function on DU where you can look up all kinds of stuff if you are interested in finding people who think the pope is awesome sauce. Advanced search.
If people around here were in love with a dude who thinks I shouldn't raise a family or get married I'd be pretty sickened whenever they fawned over him, that's just me.
truebluegreen
(9,033 posts)I like your posts, and agree with you almost all the time. On this? Well, the Catholic church is, in my view, an horrific, authoritarian, woman-hating, gay-hating institution; the previous pope was a fucking Nazi, the pope before that a repressive backward asshole who did even more damage. This pope? Slightly better than his predecessors, looks a lot better just by contrast...but still Catholic. At least his priorities, as evidenced by his actions (as opposed to words), show some reforming spirit...and if he can get one and a half billion people thinking about climate change, I'll take it.
But that's my #1 priority. Unless we address that, imho, the rest is just rearranging the deck chairs while the boat sinks.
Have a nice evening.
