http://www.addictinginfo.org/2015/06/29/nc-bigot-assaults-gay-bar-owner-over-scotus-ruling-wont-be-charged-with-a-hate-crime/A North Carolina man walked into a well-known LGBT bar with the specific purpose of starting a fight. After assaulting the bars owner more than a dozen times, the man was arrested and charged with multiple counts of simple assault. A few hours later he was out on a $3000 bond.
Lucas Dylan Wilhelmson, 21, epitomized the meaning of a hate crime. He was upset about the Supreme Court ruling on gay marriage, being the bigot that he is, and decided to lash out. He went to a place where he knew this minority demographic could be found and with malice forethought attacked a man for no reason other than his sexual orientation.
North Carolina has no protection for LGBTs under anti-discrimination laws.
Acquaintances of Wilhelmson say they dont believe he was acting in a hateful way and that the fight was because he was drunk and unruly. Police had a different take. According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police spokesman Rob Tufano, Wilhelmson came drunk, looking for trouble, and immediately began calling out people using derogatory terms. Tufano told the Charlotte Observer:

They are violent, mindless motherfuckers.

It also brings to focus another issue, which serves as a reminder that gay people "aren't there yet". Yes, we have marriage equality...WHOO HOO! LGBT people aren't included in many anti-discrimination laws; we can be fired in 13 states for being LGBT; we can lose our home in 15 (I think) states. The road to true equality and citizenship has been made a little longer, but the Emerald City is still miles away!
