Streets were steep but we didn't have any stairs, we had brick sidewalks that would land you on your kiester when it snowed or if you stepped on a Beacon Hill land mine (dog shit).

If I hit the lottery and could afford San Francisco, I'd buy another scooter.

This one, in fact;

That trailer has about 5" of ground clearance. On the cross streets (like your second to last pic, where the minivan is crossing) , where the hill levels out for a short span and then pitches down again sharply, I was worried I was going to high-center the thing!

It was an interesting day, to say the least.

is the roads that say "Trucks over 30' (or whatever) Kingpin to rear axle not advised"

"Not advised"

I always thought...what the hell! I've driven many like that. Only regretted it once!

There are most certainly routes that are restricted for long vehicles, where the sign says "Prohibited", but there are many, many routes that have signs like my first example.

Only state I have traveled where the "not advised" wording is used.

Edit here - from what I gather, when the "not advised" is posted it has to do with the tightness of the turns. Many stretches of road through the hills and mountains of your state, as I am sure you know, have hairpin after hairpin after hairpin turn. Not to mention they are often narrow as hell.

I biked everywhere as a kid. Ended up biking the Route du Vin from Colmar to Strasbourg with my bro when I was 22. Funny thing: back then I thought I was fat and not strong enough and lacking a perfect-enough body. Now, at 46, I want to kick my dumb 22 year old self and tell her to quit obsessing and enjoy her youth and freedom and the Vosges.

If you are 22-ish, consider this a cautionary tale...

The average around here is from 650 to 850 (dollars not feet), but in this area of Texas the cost of living is cheaper. Some places it is as low as 250 to 400 for people willing to live in small older housing.

He was in a designated bike lane though so big no no.
He didn't get a lot of money but they paid for all his hospital bills I think through car insurance so he didn't have to sue them for it himself
Some bikers go too fast for conditions . I doubt that was my friend

In fact, I have maps and apps that help me do that in the neighborhoods that are not familiar to me.

I have friends in Pier 39 area. I could get off at the Powell BART station and walk up and down hills to visit them, or take the Powell cable car. Instead I walk along the Embarcadero.

I have friends in the Richmond. I could bike the shortest route as the crow flies, but the smarter route is to take the Wiggle.

I can almost always avoid the blocks with staircases imbedded into the sidewalks, unless I feel like getting a workout.

Driving around for half an hour or more, one might eventually find a parking place far up the hill, or far down the hill from where you want to be.

I've got family in San Francisco. My worst parking experience ever I dropped my wife and kid's off at my sister-in-laws apartment and made it back on foot 45 minutes later...

It was great to work my muscles hard and barely notice, because I enjoyed being there so much. The only downside was breathing heavily around so much car exhaust.

My plan was always to live in the city (I'm from the South Bay, which is as boring as your poll results suggest) have no car, walk everywhere and have no need of a gym. I can't believe there was a time I actually thought I'd be able to swing a hovel in Bernal Heights (I can remember when it was a fairly affordable neighborhood).

Now the only thing I could afford in SF would be MAYBE something extra crappy in Bayview/Hunter's Point or Excelsior. The highest of high crime areas. And I'd have to live on ramen to afford that.

Oh well, enough self-pity... enjoy your beautiful city and thanks for these great pics. They bring back lots of great memories.
