What better way to celebrate the 4th of July than with a reminder of how hypocritically petty the GOP is?SCOTT ERIC KAUFMAN
Theres no better time than the Fourth of July weekend to think about the true definition of patriotism and how malleable it becomes when Republicans need to justify their opposition to a Democratic position or policy. Because if Democrats had pulled anything resembling any of these recent GOP stunts, Republicans would have demanded their immediate arrest.
1. Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal vowing to disband the Supreme Court after a decision didnt go his way
Conservatives value nothing above the Constitution written by Jesus through the minds of the sainted Framers and Article III unambiguously states that judicial power shall be vested in one Supreme Court to rule them all. Just imagine how apoplectic Republicans would become if Democrats recommended altering the immortal words of Gods chosen document after a Supreme Court decision didnt go their way. Not that you have to imagine too hard, though, given the way Republicans respond to any attempt to violate their precious Second Amendment.
2. Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton and 46 Republican colleagues writing to the leaders of Iran behind the presidents back
You know what really doesnt help already tense nuclear negotiations? Informative letters from your political opponents that fundamentally undermine not only the current presidents bargaining position, but the ability of future presidents to claim to be bargaining in good faith. But thats exactly what Cotton penned and 46 of his closest friends signed an invitation to the leaders of Iran to ignore any ignore any deal the Obama administration might strike on the grounds that the next president wouldnt uphold it.
3. Senator Tom Coburn blocking an unnecessary veterans suicide prevention bill
Im going to be objecting to this bill because it actually throws money away, the Oklahoma Republican said. Had he been a Democrat, conservatives would have howled about how 22 combat veterans kill themselves daily and insisted that by failing to support this bill, Democrats are basically bathing in the blood of Our Troops. Its almost as if they want our brave men and women in uniform to kill themselves, they would have shouted on the Senate floor.
4. Presidential hopeful Jeb Bush exploiting the hard money loophole to raise millions of dollars for his campaign
If Hillary Clinton accidentally accepted a legally dubious campaign donation, Fox News would slap a -gate on it before the day broke and be comparing it to Benghazi by nights end. Whereas the younger Bush didnt merely accept such a donation, he built his entire campaigns fundraising strategy around it but the only people you hear calling for him to recuse himself from the race are the Fox News personalities who dont think hes conservative enough to represent their Grand Ol Party.
5. Representative Mo Brooks threatening to send the president to jail over executive action on immigration

(81,322 posts)They left off #6 - Pinhead "representative" joe wilson yelling out "You Lie!" at the State of the Union Address. MY GOD. If somebody had done that when bush/cheney was up there speechifying through his slurred words, and one of our people had done that, you would NEVER hear the end of it about "how DARE they disrespect The President!" The calls of "traitor" and "terrorist" and "Saddam Lover!" and "Why do you HATE America?" would be all over the place!

(13,870 posts)Remember the Tea Baggers screaming down people at town hall meetings in 2010? Democrats tend toward being too nice to people at times. The right takes it as a sign of weakness and escalates the rhetoric. Obama's efforts to continually find 'consensus' with Republicans during his first term is a case in point.
I play softball with a Tea Party guy. Several years ago I gave him a ride to a tournament. We started a lively debate which evolved to the point where he told me to "Shut up because I was a liberal and didn't know what I was talking about". At that point I lost my temper and asked him where he got his fucking "expert credentials" and would he rather walk home. He immediately backed down and has been cordial ever since though we don't talk politics. He's a bully, basically, and was willing to push me until I said enough.

(3,469 posts)Seriously, can you imagine if some Northern states had seceded from the Union a hundred years ago or so to maybe try to become a socialist nation? Now imagine they lost but kept using their battle flag. Wingnuts would be apoplectic.
I know those of us of a certain generation hate the expression "Love it or leave it" but I think we should be shouting that at these confederate flag waving traitors. (I love throwing their words back in their faces.)

(12,504 posts)Revered Putin over their own President. Denigrating Obama saying they preferred Putin. Can you ever imagine the RW fallout if Dems had done the same within Bush was in office. I wonder if any of the GOP hopefuls have that talking point on record?
