Why is this global warming debunking wrong

some troll posted this online... I haven't heard about this but I'm sure it is BS. anyone ever heard of this before??????

Carbon dioxide acts as a coolant in Earth’s atmosphere, says new NASA report.

“NASA’s Langley Research Center has collated data proving that “greenhouse gases” actually block up to 95 percent of harmful solar rays from reaching our planet, thus reducing the heating impact of the sun,” says to this article on principia-scientific.org.

“The data was collected by Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry, (or SABER). SABER monitors infrared emissions from Earth’s upper atmosphere, in particular from carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitric oxide (NO), two substances thought to be playing a key role in the energy balance of air above our planet’s surface.”

“Carbon dioxide and nitric oxide are natural thermostats,” explains James Russell of Hampton University, SABER’s principal investigator. “When the upper atmosphere (or ‘thermosphere’) heats up, these molecules try as hard as they can to shed that heat back into space.”

Yes GH gases block IR from the sun coming in. But the atmosphere is heated from below. Light strikes the earth, is absorbed and causes heating, which causes IR to be radiated upward. GH gases trap these and keep them from being radiated into space.

Yes it is true, but does not reflect the true mechanism involved.

Footnote: (1) No one on Earth’s surface would have felt this impulse of heat. Mlynczak puts it into perspective: “Heat radiated by the solid body of the Earth is very large compared to the amount of heat being exchanged in the upper atmosphere. The daily average infrared radiation from the entire planet is 240 W/m2—enough to power NYC for 200,000 years.”

In other words, this effect is happening out there in the boundary between the atmosphere and outer space, not in the atmosphere itself.

1) this is not a "new" report, the article is dated 2012;

2) this is referring to the UPPER atmosphere. Which would be the layer adjacent to cold "space". The article is talking about CO2 and nitric oxide in the UPPER atmosphere reflecting heat from the sun back to space. This would be a separate mechanism from similar gases trapped in the lower atmosphere as those would reflect heat back to the Earth, thus causing the greenhouse effect.

Any real climate scientists, feel free to shred my explanation in #2. But it's a rational non-scientist's explanation for why the climate scientists of the world haven't retracted their warnings about global climate change based on this report from 2012. (It makes more sense to me than "THEY'RE FRAUDS!!!1!! THEY'RE ALL FRAUDS !!!!111!".)

Seriously, if you really want a good answer, try the Environment and Energy group. There are people in that group who do know what they're talking about.
