Obama administration to unveil major new rules targeting segregation across U.S.HICAGO -- When the Fair Housing Act was passed in 1968, it barred the outright racial discrimination that was then routine. It also required the government to go one step further to actively dismantle segregation and foster integration in its place a mandate that for decades has been largely forgotten, neglected and unenforced.
Now, on Wednesday, the Obama administration will announce long-awaited rules designed to repair the laws unfulfilled promise and promote the kind of racially integrated neighborhoods that have long eluded deeply segregated cities like Chicago and Baltimore. The new rules, a top demand of civil-rights groups, will require cities and towns all over the country to scrutinize their housing patterns for racial bias and to publicly report, every three to five years, the results. Communities will also have to set goals, which will be tracked over time, for how they will further reduce segregation...

(11,833 posts)If what you're saying is that it should be strengthened and enforced, I agree wholeheartedly. All republican efforts to weaken it should be beaten and buried.
I applaud this move, as it will help remove lingering vestiges of de jure and de facto segregation in housing.
We'll have to agree to disagree that it's a case of the President finally doing something for black people. I think his Administration has done a lot, but I don't feel like arguing the point here. Hope you enjoy a good day.

(4,510 posts)Also he has done little for blacks in particular and takes great pains in not talking about race. His AGs aren't that bad but that's about it. You have a good day too.

(30,151 posts)How can you make people live in places where they don't want/can't afford to live?

(5,644 posts)Landlords used to remodel a place then shot the rent up sky high, triple the amount it was before it was remodeled. The person would then have to move. That was years ago, and I don't know if that is still being done.

(918 posts)do not give a damn about receiving HUD money.
How will withholding federal funds from Greenwich, Pound Ridge and Chappaqua have any impact?
And how can any community promote affordable housing in jurisdictions that maintain four-acre zoning?

(5,644 posts)Just wondering...

(918 posts)their zoning restrictions.
BTW: "Preserving the character" is NOT a valid justification.
We live adjacent to several wealthy incorporated villages. They have arcane zoning restrictions and very restrictive requirements for contractors and tradesman. Only the wealthy and white can afford to live on two and four acre lots with minimum 5,000 square foot homes. Only businesses that are part of the entrenched graft partnership can build or repair.
These people say the right things and pull the the correct lever on the voting machine. And then live their lives behind walls and security cameras in ultra-segregated communities.
When the federal government files a fair housing suit against The Village of Hewlett Harbor... then... maybe... I'll take them seriously.
There is satisfaction, however, that we whip their lilly-white asses in every youth sport.
