Hackers, state sponsored actors, a squirrel nibbling on wires somewhere or what do you think?
Do you believe that it is coincidence that several systems have whoopsies on the same day?
Don't send me to CT Hell, this is relevant today.

(2,149 posts)We'll have to see what come out about these "glitches".
Statistics show us that coincidences happen a lot more than we think and are a lot less special or unusual then we think.
Get 23 people in a room and statistics says there's a 50/50 chance that two of them share a birthday.
I share a birthday with someone in my office, and there are only about 15 people who work there.
coincidence? Yes.

(146,317 posts)We don't know about this one, but the statement said it was just a technical problem. Those happen, too.

(146,317 posts)just in the last hour. Not all of them make the news. Unless two are demonstrably connected, I wouldn't link them. If you're talking about the airline crash and trying to link it to the NYSE crash, the two things are very unlikely to be related in any way.
Now, if two major stock market systems crashed at the same time, there might be a link. But I don't see any link here. Just a crash of some kind.
That does not mean there was not an attack, but I don't know of one, and nobody has reported one. I don't do speculation.

(10,201 posts)Like was mentioned up thread, there are thousands of computer "glitches" or "crashes" every day in the US. Probably in the 10's of thousands. They just don't make the news.
We had a major server go down today. It just so happens to be a critical financial system. One could state that it's related to the crashes/glitches at the airlines or the stock market. OMGZ! HAKERZ!
But it wasn't.
In all honesty, it was a simple security patch that caused an issue with a driver on the system, and it would no longer startup. So we rebuilt the system. Took about 6 hours.
No need to feel freaked out. They are simply machines. Machines do break down from time to time. Most IT departments extensive plans for the occasion.

(8,879 posts)the business units would love to do without. That and often times database administers and applications developers are thought of as "IT" and many times that means rather than improving and creating systems out of code, these professionals are relegated to shagging broken printers and resetting erp and email passwords.

(8,879 posts)Now they have one guy to support two custom ERP systems that have grown in each their own direction over the past 35 years for two manufacturing plants all the while he shags printers and answers help desk tickets. He's the applications developer supporting AS/400 system. I was helping him out as a temp, but there was no way he could make it all work. They went from 10 applications people to 1. He just left a couple months ago because it was simply impossible to jump as high as the company demanded.

(10,201 posts)The company makes a difference. When I started working too many hours (I'm salaried), they hired two new employees to work with me and made me a supervisor. My department has grown from 5 (MIS) to 19 (IT) people in about 15 years.

(37,748 posts)I'd want a few base lines before jumping to a conclusion-- what is the average number of systems going down on any given day being one of the more relevant.
0? 3? 300? 3000?
Glassunion
(10,201 posts)Probably a lot more than that.
LanternWaste
(37,748 posts)If so, then I'm going with three unrelated incidents, regardless of whether each particular cause was accidental, user-error or malicious (or any combination of the three).

(32,086 posts)...I might think there was something more to it. This is the second episode for them in 2 months. They've been having computer problems ever since they merged with Continental Airlines. I think it's just a coincidence this time. But, it's just a matter of time before we see another such episode with a more nefarious cause.

(8,219 posts)Even before USeless Air bought them out.
Coincidentally, they are also one the biggest outsourcers of IT infrastructure support, and, also coincidentally lobbied tooth and nail to increase the number of H1B's in the US so that they could lay off a huge chunk of their domestic IT personnel.
They don't give a shit - it's saving them a ton of money, and people will keep going back to them regardless of how much they suck.

(26,549 posts)They're unrelated. There's nothing linking them other than the date.
Take down the NYSE and NASDAQ? Then there may be something there. Take down United and Delta? Then there may be something there. Though even in those scenarios it's probably coincidence. You'd need to get more similar systems going down to make it look coordinated.
But the NYSE and United don't have anything in common.
There's several thousands "critical" systems that crash around the world every day. Today, it happened to a few places famous enough to get media coverage.
