This case has been taking a long time. I know that there was briefs filed in early May on the effect of the SCOTUS opinion in the Alabama case but this case has been out for long time

6. These drawings would make sense if everyone lived in equal population densities.

They don't. On average Democrats live in much higher population densities than Republicans. Because of that none of these simplistic drawings mean anything.

Of course it makes sense. Population density is beside the point. These illustrate gerrymandering quite well. Gaining political advantage according to how districts are drawn. Pennsylvania is insanely gerrymandered. Reading, PA and Berks County are carved up into at least 3 congressional districts in order to disperse the Democratic vote and allow for easier Republican seats.

8. No, Democrats are compacted in urban areas.

Republicans are spread out in suburban and rural areas. And I see you are ignoring the Voting Rights Act. It requires majority minority districts in urban area to protect minority rights. I would love to see you draw maps that actually comply with that law which you think is so simple.

Does Gerrymandering take place? Yes, of course. And by both sides. Democrats control the process in IL and they gerrymander there.

You said it made the illustration not make sense. To which I said it was not the point of the illustration. Gerrymandering goes on regardless of population density. Matter of fact, it makes for juicier gerrymander targets. And yes, I know it is a bipartisan weapon.

Each box represents one person. The amount of land occupied by each person is irrelevant.

and they were created. They just didn't realize that if you create 1 minority district, you can create more conservative districts.

Consider a hypothetical largely African American city surrounded by a circle of largely white suburbs where the A-A vote 90-10 Democratic and the whites vote 60-40 Republican. The area will have 8 districts. If a Democrat was drawing the lines, he would make eight pie shaped districts which would each dip into the city for enough A-A votes to overcome the Republican advantage in the burbs and elect eight Democrats who would most probably be all white. If a Republican was drawing the districts there would be two districts for the city and the burbs would be divided into six segments of the suburban ring and would elect six white Republicans and two A-A Democrats. Minorities like the second alternative better giving them safe districts and representatives that "look like them". This is why most minorities side with Republicans on redistricting.
