As of July 1, 2014, the state had about 15 million Latinos to about 14.9 million non-Hispanic whites.

Demographers had expected the shift for decades as the state's Hispanic population boomed due to immigration and birth rates. Many thought it would happen sooner than it did, but a slight decline in population pushed it to last year.

California joins New Mexico as the second state with a Latino plurality. Hawaii, with its large Asian population, is the third state where whites aren't the largest ethnic group.

I recall seeing articles that say white people nationwide will be a minority in this or that year, but they do it by combining all non-white people together as one "race" that is over 50%. That always bugged me for some reason.

I had to laugh at myself when I'd go back east and "Wow, look at all these white people!" would enter my mind. You do get used to being another minority quickly when it happens.

Fortunately, my brown and black friends, coworkers and neighbors are tolerant.

14. If I ever move back to Cleveland..

I will really miss good Tex Mex and Mexican food. However, that will be replaced with good pizza, Italian, real delis, pierogis, Puerto Rican food, etc. Cleveland has a great ethnic mix (at least they did when I left in 92)

21. I grew up in a 99% white Southern California community...

... kept that way by the unspoken and eventually illegal collusion of real estate agents, lenders, landlords, and police whose favorite sport was dwb's and other forms of harassment.

But haven't lived in such a place for most of my life now. I'm most comfortable in places where I'm a white minority.

My middle school and high school experience was pretty miserable. I was a squeaky skinny reactive kid and target of much bullying, so I quit high school for college and never looked back.

My wife and I were big city science teachers when we married, both of us teaching in underfunded, overcrowded, worn out public schools. The school where I taught was majority Latino, and the rest a cosmopolitan mix of black, white, Asian, and Pacific Islander kids.

That's pretty much what I consider an ordinary California community now. Any California community south of the Sutter Buttes that's still lily white, I may begin to wonder why.

We have Cruz and Rubio both running for Pres. and they are Senators.
Fla. and Cal. and the SW will have Congressional representation pretty fast, compared to the Med-west.

Now, LatinAS are needed too, in politics.
