GOP must destroy Donald Trump before he destroys them. It may already be too late

Trump is the latest Joseph McCarthy or George Wallace. The GOP must excise the poison. History says they won't

RANDALL J. STEPHENS

Slightly hunched over and surrounded by a forest of “Jeb!” signs and shouting supporters, Jeb Bush was pressed by a reporter about the bigoted, race-baiting comments made by leading GOP candidate, hotel mogul and kitsch peddler Donald Trump. Jeb, seeming like he did not particularly relish the chance to answer this question, remarked, “I don’t assume that he thinks that every Mexican crossing the border is a rapist.”

Bush was holding back and making excuses. Surely the Trump stunt, Bush figured, was meant to “inflame and incite and draw attention, which seems to be the organizing principle of his campaign.” The coiffed king of bad taste did not represent the Republican Party, said Bush. But is that really true? Republican Party renegades can always tack to the far right. It pays to do so.

Trump has been polling amazingly well. Apparently his comments about drug-smuggling Mexicans, anchor babies, rapists and jobless chiselers have helped him with the crimson-red base of the party. Many major news polls place him second — some even in first. He and his swooped coif have a strong chance of appearing in the first TV debates scheduled for Aug. 6.

Where is the outrage from other GOP candidates? Some respond to Trump’s bomb throwing with little more than a shrug of the shoulders. Others express the kind of dissatisfaction a suburbanite might register at crabgrass on the neighbor’s lawn. Said Republican candidate Sen. Ted Cruz, “I’m not going to engage in the media’s game of throwing rocks and attacking other Republicans.” In fact, the senator commented, “I salute Donald Trump for focusing on the need to address illegal immigration.”

because he appeals to the part of the base that thinks that President Obama was born in Kenya and is a socialist Muslim communist, they can't stand the fact that we have a black man as the president, and they think that everybody coming into this country is a criminal and is taking all of our jobs away.

I think the last straw was when the flag came down in South Carolina under a Republican governor. they have completely come undone. Trump is the only true champion left of their xenophobic racist mindset. They're not gonna let him go.

hopefully he will have enough support to mount a third-party run after the GOP establishment figures out someway to exclude him.

is that Trump has provided a real focal point for all of the tribal crazies to really rally around. As much as I hate what they spew, I'm glad that they are finally going to crawl out of the woodwork and show themselves for who they really are. And trump was the one to make that happen, irony of all ironies.

keeping fingers crossed.....

When someone like Bree Newsome can 'capture' a Confederate flag, thereby helping inspire pretty much the entire fucking country to get rid of them all...

When someone like Trump can run for President and no one in the GOP is leader enough (can I say 'man enough'?) to stop him...

When Boehner tries to sneak in a Confederate flag amendment and then backs down like a whipped dog...

When gay rights are given such legitimacy that even Republican governors are backing down...

When Rush Limbaugh's ratings are in the toilet...

When Sarah Palin's contract is not renewed by Fox News...

All these things together indicate the very real turning of an historical tide.

In fact, I think Bree Newsome's actions will be right up there -in retrospect- with the fall of the Berlin Wall and Rosa Parks.

Mark my words, we will look back on this summer with pride.

and they say that like it's a bad thing. Go figure.

I see it as an opportunity for all the "moderate", "centrist", "corporatist", and "right-leaning" Democratic congresscritters (like those who voted for TPA) to follow their hearts and form the NEW republican party, and leave the rest of us the hell alone. You'd be left with two semi-sane parties (left and right, but not so far right that they worship Ghengis Khan) to conduct the country's business, and all they'd really have to fight tooth-and-nail over is who has to take Zell Miller. Sounds like a win-win to me.
