Android Continues To Upload Your Photos Without Your Consent To Google After You Delete The Photos App

There they were, hundreds of photos I’d taken of my wife, my daughter, and me, grouped together by Google’s facial-recognition technology in the company’s Photos app, all snapped over the course of a little more than a month. The problem was, I’d deleted all of those pictures, and most distressing, I didn’t even have the Google Photos app on my phone.

This spring, when Google separated photos from Google Plus into its own dedicated app, I was intrigued by the possibility that the company had managed to create a better alternative to Yahoo’s Flickr for people who want something more robust than Facebook or Instagram, and encouraged by positive reviews from Gizmodo and other sites. As someone who shares a lot of photos semi-privately with family, Flickr has been a good solution since I convinced my largely non-Facebooking parents to have the Flickr app on their phones and I can share photos of my infant daughter with them — and only them — automatically through appropriate privacy settings.

But there were enough enticing features in Google’s new app that I had to see if it might work for me, so a day or two after it was released, I downloaded the app to my Android phone, took a couple of test photos, and began playing with both the app and the web site. Ultimately, despite liking the general feel of the app and a few of the algorithmic features, I decided to stick with Flickr because it serves its purpose well and I didn’t want to bother asking my parents to learn new tools. I uninstalled the app from my phone and moved on with life.

The author goes on to explain that this happens no matter what settings you change on your Android phone.

That should have been a major issue to Google, in a rational world. SusanCalvin Jul 2015 #1
So that's an app that needs to be added? cui bono Jul 2015 #2

I find their casual, dismissive response appalling.

My phone is rooted and running a custom ROM (OS) and I'm still back on Ice-Cream Sandwich, so probably this doesn't affect me, but just wondering if this is a photo app that is integrated in the OS or one you have to install. Sounds like it's not in the OS, but I wonder about the newer versions.

I can tell you I am not liking how Google has gone the route of trying to integrate everything into its own ecosystem, like Apple does. I like to pick and choose what I want to use, what sites I'm logged into, etc... I hate that just because I'm logged into my email account on my computer that when I go to youtube I'm logged in there too. I don't want all of that stuff connected. I don't even know if it would be possible to not be connected like that on your phone since your google play account lets them know who you are and you're always connected to that, and email accounts are generally always active on the phone for ease of use. I think it's time to find another email addy to use that's not gmail.
