In the "Doonesbury" piece, Jane Fonda -- in the years when she was hawking fitness videos -- is shown discussing how easy it would be for her maid, an older black woman, to lead a healthier, more active lifestyle.

When the maid explains that she is too busy to devote two to four hours a day to working out in the gym, Fonda chastises her and explains that she (Fonda) leads a very active life, what with her wide flung business interests, her active social life, and her burgeoning fitness empire.

Why, if she can make time for exercise, Fonda concluded, anyone else can make the time too.

To which the maid replies: "Excuse me, honey, but you're as busy as you want to be. I'm as busy as I got to be. I hate to break it to you, but there's a big difference.

Even here on DU, Brand has been praised for his daring insights, when his screeds might reasonably be boiled down to "I love publicity."

Moreover, many people accept as truth the beliefs identified in that article, so the article is a roundabout way to mock those ridiculous beliefs while insulting the celebrities who embrace them, without directly insulting the readers to might also believe.

and I can't remember an acolyte of Nancy Grace on DU. Universal disdain seems to have been the reaction to her.

The belief is still stupid even if the given celebrity is not smart. And even if everyone here recognizes Nancy Grace as a complete dumbass, enough people see her as "smart" enough to have made herself worth several million, so they're apt to perceive her as "smart" regardless.

Also I've read statements broadly similar to Mills' wackiness here on DU, though not the "40 year claim," I admit.

so there's this South African Gold miner who is trapped in a mine collapse for three days. When they finally extricate him they have to amputate his leg. His buddies come to visit him in the hospital and tell him that he's gonna be good as new in no time. He replies, "What would anyone want with a one-legged gold-digger?" One of the guys says, "Call Paul McCartney."

On edit: my wife didn't like her from the start. During an interview the reporter asked her what it was like to be engaged to Paul. Her reply was like Oh, he's just another man.

No he isn't: he's Paul McCartney. Bad sign said my wife and she was absolutely right! As she is about everything - you can ask her....I said to her some time ago, "you would think that just once in 29 years I would make a mistake and do something exactly right." Went over like a lead balloon.
