... A group of Oklahomans spent the day parading through the metro ... This is us trying to say that we have our rights. We have a right to fly our flag and were not taking it down ... But the backlash wasn't far behind ... Many were extremely disappointed in what went on ... Its a lot of racial hatred. People can say that its supporting the history of the South or part of southern heritage, but to me, the confederate flag has always stood for nothing but hate and always will be ...

BTW: Oklahoma finally became a state in 1907 -- more than 40 years after the Civil War ended --

(31,874 posts)They had nothing to do with the civil war -
There's NO reason to display that 'heritage' - it's not yours.
They are bigots. That's what that flag means to them - especially in light of the riots they had out there . . .

(12,778 posts)Not entirely true. The last Confederate general to surrender was Cherokee Stand Waite, from what was then called Indian Territory. There were several volunteer units from Indian Territory and Oklahoma Territory, and much of the conflict here stemmed from tribal conflicts that were separate from the larger national issues. John Ross, the Cherokee chief, was pro-union and was actually captured by pro-Confederate forces at one time.

(31,874 posts)There is no 'states' rights. There were individuals involved -
This was not their 'heritage' or 'fight'.
They were not a part of the confederacy.
When you make excuses for people it implies you agree. It makes their behavior permissible.
What you permit - is what you promote.

(31,874 posts)What year did they become a state?
I'm in Telecom - I like 'linear thinking' .
Point of Origination to Point of Termination. It's simple.
What was the point of Origination?
1863? I missed that in my history class. Then again - my 10th grade history teacher told me 'All slaves enjoyed being slaves'. . . Mr. Bates. I got him fired for that.

(12,723 posts)Just kidding fortunately most modern Oklahomans reject this bullshit. I know the three I raised are not racists.
And yeah, you are right even if it offends their literal minds.

(27,247 posts)in large part because the country represented by the Stars and Stripes had forced his people to march hundreds of miles to Indian Territory.

(15,243 posts)The people using the Southern Heritage line today are supporting a racist murderer and racist murder in practice. Two months ago not as much even though I encountered people who had Southern Heritage idea regularly in my hobby of visiting and photographing battlefields. The racist thread was there but was suppressed not any more it is out in the open.

(31,874 posts)I was starting to think I had entered an alternative universe where people could make any excuse they wanted to in order to support a bunch of bigots. Good grief!
