OMFG....OK State Repuke Party Post on Facebook -- UNREAL AND RACIST!!!!

Opponents of maintaining state and federal funding for social safety net programs have a long history of making comparisons between government beneficiaries and animals, which is widely considered to be a racially coded insult.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich once said that the current welfare system is “turning children into young animals and they are killing each other.” A GOP congressional candidate in Texas, meanwhile, compared welfare beneficiaries to donkeys.

The “don’t feed the animals” meme in particular is popular among GOP candidates. In 2012, a Minnesota state representative made nearly the exact same comparison while making the case that less money should be allocated to food stamps. In 2010, a Republican candidate for governor in South Carolina criticized food stamps by saying his grandmother “told me as a small child to quit feeding stray animals” because “they breed.” Both later apologized.

Largely because of this attitude toward people living in poverty, signing up for food stamps remains deeply stigmatized in the United States. Outreach coordinators for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) say that a big part of their job is challenging misconceptions about exactly what the program does and how many different kinds of people rely on it. In fact, there’s relatively high labor force participation among people in the SNAP program because it’s specifically designed to supplement the wages of low-income workers.

Class warfare is as ingrained in the GOP as is racism. They engage in both without even necessarily doing so consciously.

But my point is that, despite the comparison here to animals -- a comparison which is definitely reminiscent of a historic attitude toward African Americans as being "less than human" -- it seems to me that this thoughtless Okie Republican is blithely smearing ALL food stamp recipients, and yet no one can deny that a great many white citizens, too, are on food stamps in Oklahoma as well as everywhere else.

The ironic thing is that many of these white people probably bring this Republican abuse on themselves at the ballot box because, you know, God, gays, and guns.

Most people on food stamps are white, and oddly this strategy works with a lot of them, too. The GOP has worked hard to connect food stamps with African American in the minds of white people, and they've had a lot of success. Even poor white people on food stamps get angry about food stamps because they think it's the government taking money away from white people and giving it to black people. Racism is a powerful thing. It gets people to defy logic and common sense.

The comparison to animals is what shows this is a major dog whistle. Totally racist.

Animals don't beg for scraps from so-called job creators like how the Republicans want the poor to do.

Classist and general disdain for the poor, yes. You'd have to make several unconnected mental leaps on your own to bring this around to the point of being racist.

In Oklahoma and in most if not all of the nation the majority of recipients of food assistance are white and a hell of a lot of recipients of all colors have jobs. Just shitty jobs. Because that is all there is.

Their business model has historically required the American taxpayer to subsidize their employees' low wages as these employees still qualify for -- and need -- SNAP.

But didn't I read somewhere recently that Wal-Mart was looking at increasing wages across the board?

That's exactly the story conservatives like to tell, which is why many here see it as a veiled attempt at racism by the OK GOP. According to conservatives, most welfare recipients are minorities who would rather collect money from the government than actually work, and according to conservatives, most minorities are welfare recipients.

It just doesn't seem to apply much here. I can take past instances from any number of things and make parallela to present occurrences , but they will be tenuous at best. They made a comparison between animals and food stamp recipienrs. Forgive me for not reading "animals" and immediately thinking, " oh, black people!".

When everything is racist, nothing is.

Creative rationalization... with a clever, though ultimately meaningless bumper-sticker as a faux-conclusion.

No doubt, we often deny ourselves the opportunity to perceive anything that doesn't validate our bias.

But still... creative rationalization.

They probably shouldn't eat them, though. They're likely rancid. Just make it for sport. I'm sure most republicans could respect that.

the slimebuckets quoted their patron saint. Do they carry a pocket copy of "Quotations from Chairman Reagan" around with them at all times?

Good bedtime reading for those with insomnia: "Characteristics of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Households: Fiscal Year 2013". Google "snap recipients demographics" and look for the USDA report (it's a PDF). Table A-21 (Distribution of Participating Households With Selected Characteristics by the Race/Hispanic Status of the Household Head) is the one I have a printed copy of to shut up the occasional racist remark about who receives SNAP benefits.
