Let's see. 1953 we backed Pahlavi despite the fact that Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh was democratically elected. Pahlavi engaged in the same behavior as the despots around the world, silencing critics through imprisonment, torture, death etc etc. The west then gave him sanctuary after he fled during the revolution. We then armed Iraq in the 80s. Yeah, our failed foreign policy with Iran is not entirely their fault. We have made MANY mistakes.

US overthrew an elected leader, and installed the Shah as dictator. Roughly 25 years of a repressive dictatorship led to the Shah being overthrown. During that revolt, some Americans were taken hostage. Ronald Reagan, then merely a candidate for POTUS, cut a deal with Iran to hold on to the hostages until the election was over.
The takeaway: 1) US shouldn't have meddled in an emerging democracy in Iran in the first place. 2) Ronald Reagan was a traitor.
