all of those ads that keep popping up on websites were driving me CRAZY.
And they kept hanging up my computer.

(891 posts)I had something on mine that prevented just normal video from playing because most sites run ads in their video and I had to remove it. I had to take it off. But I hate all the ads on the sites.

(2,068 posts)Blocks a shit ton of ads. But if you notice a certain site is not working and you want it to, you can just click it off and reload the page.

(38,312 posts)The only site that irritates me a bit, but not enough for me to do anything about it, is BBC news.
The vast majority of any television news is carefully edited and spun propaganda anyways, aimed directly at the most primitive parts of the human mind, parts that can't discriminate between a television picture and being there in reality.
Flash is a tool advertisers use to collect data on consumers, even when their browsers' privacy settings are set to high and ads are blocked. I suppose some also use it as a way of controlling "intellectual property." That's fine by me. If somebody wants to make it annoying to see their "property" then I don't have to see their "property," right? I lose nothing; they do.
The only advertising I routinely block are ads that move. I hate moving stuff on web pages unless I allow it to move.
I'm not a mindless consumer cog in either "the economy" or the political landscape. I'm just a visiting feral human person who was born with nothing and will die with nothing.
If I can't give something away, for whatever reason, it was never really mine.

(32,083 posts)It allows you to enable/disable a number of things, inluding Flash, Java, Java Script and Silver Light. It makes a world of difference on my ancient, decrepit desktop with insufficient memory. The Flash issue has been one giant pain in the ass, even on my fairly new laptop.

(8,303 posts)I would have to give it permission to activate. It makes everything run a lot faster.
Go into Tools (if you don't have the menu bar showing, enable it), Add-ons, Plug-ins, and either set it to never activate or ask to activate.
You will enjoy browsing much more.
