The latest call for a youth uprising against global capitalism came not from grassroots groups, but from the leader of the Catholic Church, who on Sunday gave a rousing speech during which he told a crowd of young people in Paraguay that it is their time to "make a mess."
The address marked the end of Pope Francis' week-long pilgrimage to Latin America, during which he also assailed the prevailing economic system as the "dung of the devil," saying that the systemic "greed for money" is a "subtle dictatorship" that "condemns and enslaves men and women."
During Sunday's rally, which was held on the banks of the Paraguay River outside the capital Asunción, the Argentinian pontiff went off-script as he addressed tens of thousands of local youth.
"They wrote a speech for me to give you. But speeches are boring," Pope Francis said. "Make a mess, but then also help to tidy it up. A mess which gives us a free heart, a mess which gives us solidarity, a mess which gives us hope."
He also encouraged those present to look at their less fortunate peers, some of whom he met earlier in the day during a visit to the Banado Norte shantytown, and spoke of the connection between authentic liberty and responsibility and the necessity of fighting for the right to lead a dignified life.
Classic Liberation Theology. Funny, the guy didn't look like a long-haired hippie rabble-rouser when the cardinals sent up the white smoke...

(14,576 posts)All the s**t he's been spewing out has been piling up but it is about to hit the fan.
The Catholics, Occupy, Black Lives Matter, the people supporting Bernie Sanders in larger numbers each day - we're TIRED of wading through that ol' devil dung, don't you know.

(9,610 posts)I implore the pope to look through this lens at people of minority sexual persuasions, for they have been treated unfortunately by bigots and "on the wall" types for ages. They have a right to a dignified life as well.
I support the pope on his economic stances.

(2,941 posts)for sure, in modern history. And he's one of the few in all of history.
For example, this is a major move forward that none of our current batch of political leaders have the courage to address. This is an important document even from a completely secular perspective:

(38,317 posts)My ancestors were not-Mormons in Mormon territory. They actually made a kind of living out of that as water-masters, telephone linemen, surveyors, and discrete sellers of alcoholic beverages; all trusted outsiders granted immunity from back-stabbing LDS Church politics.
Sadly my scalp no longer supports a ponytail. When my wife complains I'm looking like Grizzly Adams or a homeless person, I set the buzz cutter on three and do everything above my armpits. I've all these weird hairs on my left shoulder that I attribute to long shirtless drives across North American western deserts in cars without air conditioning and the window open. Ive had nasty skin things cut out of my left arm and sent to the pathologists too.
Anyways, I don't think it's right for anyone to be uber-wealthy when the people who work for them live in poverty.
A just economy pumps fresh oxygenated money into the bottom of the pond and skims the scum off the top.
The uber-wealthy, those who buy the political process, they are the scum, and they ought to be taxed out of existence.

(2,941 posts)Even from a completely secular perspective it is a historically important and very well written document.
It can be considered a crisis of political leadership that the pope is outlining the most reasonable, rational and secular arguments and plans for addressing the root causes of disparity, poverty and the degradation of our quality of life.
It isn't just a Republican problem. The Democratic Party has failed at addressing these critical issues such that mainstream religious organizations are becoming united to address these existential problems.
Meanwhile, TPP is going in the exact opposite direction.
